Victor Cortez Scores Third Goal in Last Two Matches for
the Dons
(Spokane, WA) – USF men's soccer opened up its
Pacific Northwest road trip with a 3-1 loss at Gonzaga in West
Coast Conference action Friday afternoon at the Gonzaga Soccer
Field. The Dons (2-8-2, 0-4-1 WCC) gave up a goal in the first
minute of the contest to the Bulldogs (4-8-0, 1-4-0 WCC) who
collected their first home win of the season.
Senior midfielder Victor Cortez scored his team-leading third goal
of the season with an equalizer in the 14th minute. It was the
third strike for Cortez in his last two matches after scoring a
pair in a 2-2 deadlock at Santa Clara last Friday.
It was all Gonzaga from there. The Zags tallied the go-ahead goal
with Colin Flynn's second tally of the season in the 28th
minute. Gonzaga added some insurance when Mitchell Weller scored
his first of the year in the 85th minute. Stefan Eysteinsson got GU
on the board :50 seconds into the contest with his third of
2010.
"They scored a goal in the first minute and we were behind
the eight-ball from there," USF head coach Erik Visser said.
"We got off to a really slow start. Overall Gonzaga played
with more urgency than we did. We defended poorly and gave up some
soft goals. On the day it was not good enough and Gonzaga was the
better team."
Gonzaga held a 21-17 shots lead, 11-9 in attempts on target. The
Dons did have a slim 10-9 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Roslund suffered the loss for San
Francisco and matched a season-high with eight saves. Ryan
Caballero collected the win for the Bulldogs and also made eight
saves on the day.
USF returns to action Sunday, October 17 when it takes on Portland.
Match time against the Pilots is set for 2:30 PM at Merlo
Field.
