Dons Continue Play in the 2010 Bay Area Soccer Classic
Sunday at No. 21 Cal
(San Francisco) – USF men's soccer created plenty of scoring
opportunities, but could not convert as Stanford seized a 1-0 win
on a foggy Thursday night at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (1-2-1)
suffered their second straight shutout as the Cardinal (1-4-0)
collect their first win of the season and beat the Green and Gold
for the third straight year.
San Francisco held a whopping 15-5 shot advantage, six of them on
target. Stanford connected on its fourth shot of the second half as
Dominique Yahyavi took a pair of feeds and sent a scoring strike to
the far post from eight yards away in the 86th minute. Alexander
Binnie and Adoni Levine were credited with assists.
USF created more opportunities in the closing seconds but could
not solve Cardinal keeper Jason Dodson (1-4-0) who made all the
plays his team needed. Dodson made six saves on 15 shot attempts.
USF sophomore Brendan Roslund
(1-2-1) collected one save for the Dons.
"Although we are very disappointed with the home loss, I was
very pleased because we executed the game plan for 90 minutes and
we didn't give anything away to Stanford until Fred Loechen,
our center back, got hurt," USF head coach Erik Visser said.
"Considering this is a team that started four freshman and
three sophomores and I was pleased that against a team as good as
Stanford is that we were able to compete very effectively. I
thought overall we were the better team, but that's the game
of soccer."
Sophomore striker Oscar Englund
fired a match-high four shots for USF while freshman midfielders Vergard
Karlsen and Karl Kraft
fired three apiece. Stanford's Bobby Warshaw fired a team-high
two.
USF returns to action in the 2010 Bay Area Soccer Classic Sunday,
September 19 when it travels across the Bay Bridge to take on No.
21 Cal. Match time against the Golden Bears is set for 3:30 PM at
Edwards Stadium.
