Box Score SAN JOSE, Calif. -
Sixto Porras tallied a pair of goals Sunday night as the University of San Francisco men's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory at San Jose State. San Francisco controlled a majority of the match, as the Dons defense held the Spartans to just six shots in the shutout.
"I am proud of how they bounced back from a tough 1-0 loss at home Friday," commented head coach Erik Visser. "It's always a good feeling to get that first win out of the way, especially when it's on the road. It was a very solid victory for us tonight. I am pleased that we pieced a strong game together for the second straight game in the past 48 hours. We really had a strong team effort, resulting in a shutout against a good San Jose State team."
The victory marked the first of the season for the Dons, who improve to 1-1-0 this season.
Both squads played evenly in the opening half, taking a 0-0 score into halftime. During the opening 45 minutes, San Francisco outshot San Jose State 5-2 and held a 5-3 corner kick advantage.
The second half proved to be the difference for the Green and Gold. Ten minutes into the second stanza, Porras connected on a cross from
Taylor Krueger to head the ball into the far corner to give the Dons the 1-0 advantage.
San Francisco solidified the victory with five minutes remaining in the match, as Porros headed in his second goal of the night off of a corner kick that resulted in a loose ball.
Brendan Roslund, the reigning West Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, earned the shutout, playing all 90 minutes and recording two saves.
The Dons will return to the pitch Thursday, September 6 when they host UC Davis at 7 p.m. on the Hilltop.
