CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – San Francisco was just one minute away from a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Saturday afternoon at Newtown Campus Field, but Derrick Boateng's goal in the 109th-minute gave Boston College a late 2-1 victory.
Michael Shaddock's one-timer from six yards out in the eighth minute gave the Dons (2-2-2) a very early 1-0 lead in USF's first and only match in the Eastern time zone this season. San Francisco nearly put a goal on the board seven minutes into the contest when Shaddock took a shot from just outside the box. His attempt got past Eagles' (3-3-1) goalkeeper Alex Kapp but hit the crossbar, keeping the match scoreless until Shaddock connected one minute later.
Shaddock, a junior transfer from UC Berkeley, came into Saturday's match with one goal on the year and a team-high 11 shots. The forward added three more shots, two of which were on goal, in 64 minutes of play against the Eagles.
Kyle Macleod picked up his first assist on the season, delivering the ball to Shaddock inside the box.
USF held the 1-0 advantage until the 71st-minute when Ryan Dunn scored on a rebound from six yards out. Dunn's goal pushed the game into overtime, where neither side was able to take advantage in the first 10 minutes of extra time.
The match looked destined for a draw, but Eagles' (3-3-1) freshman Derrick Boateng scored from 15 yards out to snatch a draw from the grasp of USF.
Miguel Aguilar led the Dons with four shots, two on goal. USF had one more shot on goal in the match, despite being outshot 19 to 13.
Prior to Saturday, USF and Boston College had faced each other four times. The first two matches between USF and Boston College ended in draws, a scoreless one in 1979 and then a 1-1 tie in 1982 - both of those contests were played at Boston College. The last time these two teams met was in 1996 at the UConn Soccer Classic when the Dons won, 2-1.
San Francisco now enters West Coast Conference play, traveling to face Portland on Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m. Last season, the Dons split against the Pilots, winning at home 2-1 on Mauricio Diaz de Leon's game winning goal and falling on the road 1-2 in the second to last game of the season.
