SAN FRANCISCO—The Dons look to get back to their winning ways this week after having their three-match win streak snapped at Cal Poly when they host UC Davis and travel to San Jose State. Friday's match against UC Davis will mark only the third home match for the team this season.
Â
San Francisco has won 12 of the 14 all-time matchups with UC Davis and has more victories over San Jose State than any other opponent.
Â
LAST TIME OUTThe Dons fell behind early at Cal Poly, rallied and had two chances to tie the game, one a
Jesus Del Toro shot that went wide and another was a goal that was taken away on an offsides call, but came up short as they fell 2-1 on Friday night. It snapped a three-game win streak, the team's longest since 2011.
Â
DEFENSE ON LOCKDOWNWhile the Dons offense has come alive through the first five matches, their defense has been nearly as impressive. San Francisco recorded two shutouts two weekends ago and goalkeeper
Chase Hauser has been in the center of it. He holds a 0.83 goals against average, which ranks 54th in the nation.
Â
CONFERENCE PLAY ON HORIZONThe Dons are drawing closer to the start of West Coast Conference play and will see their first conference opponent next week when they play at San Diego on Oct. 3. The first three matches against conference opponents will not count as league games due to the addition of Pacific to the league. Unlike in previous seasons, the Dons will only play each WCC opponent in league action once.
Â
TOUGH PRESEASON SLATE CONTINUESThe Dons have faced one of the more daunting preseason schedules in the nation with matches against then-No. 21 Wisconsin, previously-No. 23 UIC in the opening weekend and then-No. 24 Florida Gulf Coast two weeks ago. They will also face defending WCC champion Loyola Marymount twice and No. 19 Stanford.
Â
TAKING DOWN THE TOP 25The Dons have posted wins over No. 21 Wisconsin to open the season and beat No. 24 Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night. The two wins over Top 25 teams marks the first time the program has accomplished the feat since 2011 when they beat No. 18 Santa Clara and No. 25 Portland in consecutive matches.
Â
GROUNDING THE EAGLESThe Dons welcomed in No. 24 Florida Gulf Coast for the team's home opener on Friday night and controlled much of the match, wearing the Eagles down. Following an FGCU red card, the Dons finally scored on a 72nd minute penalty kick by
Danny Kirkland to give them a 1-0 lead. It was his second game-winner of the season and gave the Dons their second win over a Top 25 team.
Â
TAMING THE BADGERSThe Dons got a first half goal from newcomer
Davi Ramos and another goal from
Danny Kirkland to take a 2-0 lead against No. 21 Wisconsin. The Badgers scored in the 81st minute but that is as close as they would get. It was the first time since 2007 the Dons had defeated a ranked opponent (2-1 vs. No. 11 California) and is the first time since 2008 they had beaten a Big Ten opponent.
Â
SUMMER WITH MLS SQUADSMiguel Aguilar was among a group of Dons who participated with various MLS developmental teams this summer. Aguilar spent the summer with the Portland Timbers developmental academy and played in eight games, recording a goal and an assist.
Danny Kirkland and
Joshua Smith were with the San Jose Earthquakes academy and gained valuable experience to bring back to the Dons this season.
Â
ABOUT UC DAVISThe Dons had dominated the series, going 12-0-1 all-time before last season when UC Davis took the contest 1-0. So far this season, the Aggies have not lost a match and have forced four ties in the last five matches. They have three players who have scored two goals apiece. Goalkeeper Kris Schultz has a 0.72 GAA.
Â
ABOUT SAN JOSE STATEThe Dons have won eight of the last 10 matchups with San Jose State, including the last three, and in last year's game they got goals from
Danny Kirkland and
Jesus Del Toro for a 2-1 victory. The Spartans have allowed at least two goals in three of their last four matches (1-3) and have recorded only one shutout. Rory Knibbs leads San Jose State with four goals and two assists.
