SAN FRANCISCO -- The Dons (6-10-0, 4-1-0) find themselves in the middle of the WCC title hunt as they travel to San Diego to take on the Toreros on Friday evening at 5 p.m. from Torero Stadium. This contest will determine whether the Dons have a shot at winning their first WCC championship since 2008 – a win or tie against San Diego means the Dons could potentially capture the conference crown and the NCAA Tournament automatic bid if they are then able to defeat Loyola Marymount in the regular season finale on Nov. 14.
LAST TIME OUT: The Dons completed a 2-0 Northwest sweep this past weekend with a 3-1 win at Gonzaga on Friday, followed by a 3-1 victory at Portland on Sunday. David Garrett highlighted the Dons' weekend with three goals and an assist. Garrett scored in the ninth minute at Gonzaga, before assisting on Sean Bowman's goal in the 26th minute. Davi Ramos added the other goal for the Dons with a penalty kick in the 15th minute.
Against the Pilots, Garrett connected for two goals – his first career multi-goal game – in the 25th and 27th minutes, while Bowman added another goal in the 62nd minute. USF outshot Portland 13-7 on the day with an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
NOTES AND TIDBITS
• David Garrett was named WCC Player of the Week after scoring three goals with an assist over the weekend; it was his first career honor and the first for the Dons since Danny Kirkland on Sept. 2, 2014
• David Garrett enjoyed his first career multi-goal game at Portland this past Sunday; he scored in the 25th and 27th minutes
• In brief, in order to have a shot at the WCC title the Dons need San Diego to lose at least once over their final two games; if USF defeats the Toreros, then the Dons would then need to at least tie with LMU in the regular season finale while having San Diego lose or tie in their finale against Santa Clara
• The Dons have scored three goals in three of their last four contests, all victories
• USF has not lost a game this year when they've scored multiple goals
• David Garrett has scored five of his team-best seven goals during WCC play
• The Dons were outscored went 2-9-0 and were outscored 28-11 during nonconference play, but have since gone 4-1-0 and outscored opponents 11-4 in WCC action
• USF's 2-1 win at Santa Clara (Oct. 11) was the Dons' first road victory of the season
• The Dons' match at No. 21 New Mexico on Sept. 30 was their third against a ranked team this season
• USF's 22 goals have been scored by eight different players
• Their match against CSU Bakersfield (Sept. 24) was the Dons' first overtime contest of the season
• No Dons have started all 16 matches this year, but Manny Padilla and Christian De Luna are the only ones to have started 15 of the 16 contests
• Davi Ramos is the only Don to have started every match he's played in (13 starts)
• Andre Glasnovic's nine saves at Stanford (Sept. 18) were the most for a USF goalkeeper since Chase Hauser saved 10 against San Diego on Nov. 9, 2014
• The Dons' five goals scored against La Salle on Sept. 6 were the most USF has scored in a single match since a 6-0 win over Sacramento State on Oct. 3, 2003.
• Andre Glasnovic is the first freshman to start in goal for the Dons since Brendan Roslund in 2009
• Christian De Luna has logged the most minutes on the pitch for the Dons this year (1,287)
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Three different Dons have tallied multi-goal games this season. Davi Ramos and Aaron Lombardi each registered a two-goal game in the same 5-0 win over La Salle (Sept. 6), while David Garrett collected a pair of goals in USF's 3-1 win at Portland (Nov. 1). It was the first time any of them had scored multiple goals in their careers.
ON THE WORLD STAGE
Freshman defender Hunter Ashworth missed five games to join the New Zealand U-17 national team in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Santiago, Chile, where New Zealand went 1-2-1 in group play. Ashworth was one of two players on the squad who hail from countries outside of New Zealand.
TARGET ON THEIR BACKS
The Dons had the dubious honor of being picked to win the WCC title this season, as voted in the WCC Preseason Poll. USF captured two first-place votes, but was one of five teams to receive first-place votes, along with Saint Mary's (1), San Diego (2), LMU (2) and Santa Clara (1). The Dons finished in a tie with Saint Mary's for second place in the 2014 final standings.
BLAZING THE TRAIL
Second-year head coach Eddie Soto has no qualms with taking his team on the road to build a strong non-conference schedule in 2015. USF will only enjoy six contests at Negoesco Stadium this year, but will face five NCAA Tournament teams from 2014 (Penn State, Stanford, Cal State Fullerton, San Diego, Cal). The Dons will also travel to face five teams ranked in the NSCAA Preseason Top-25: No. 23 Penn State (Aug. 28), No. 8 Stanford (Sept. 18), No. 16 Cal (Sept. 20), and Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 13) and New Mexico (Sept. 30), who were both receiving votes.
BLUE CHIPS
Second-year head coach Eddie Soto and his staff made strides in building on last year's second-place WCC finish by going out and piecing together one of the nation's best recruiting classes. The Dons' 2015 class, made up of 12 newcomers (3 transfers/9 freshmen), was ranked No. 41 in the country by College Soccer News over the summer.
