MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The USF men's soccer team suffered a 6-0 loss at West Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (1-1-0) wasted little time as they scored their first goal in the fifth minute when Joey Piatczyc dribbled down the left wing and chipped a short cross into the middle of the box where Jamie Merriam punched it in with his left foot from about eight yards out.
West Virginia then took a 2-0 lead in the seventh minute as Piatczyc bent a corner kick in from the right corner arc that was headed in by Merriam.
Later on in the first half, Mike Desiderio fired a high, firm shot from around the penalty arc that tipped off USF keeper Ryan Buckingham's fingertips and dropped behind him for the score, putting the Mountaineers up 3-0 heading into the half.
West Virginia then added three goals in the second half.
USF (0-2-0) was forced to play the majority of the second half shorthanded after Davi Ramos was issued a red card in the 48th minute. Despite moving the ball well, the Dons faced a stout WVU backfield that didn't allow many USF chances.
Ryan Buckingham (0-2-0) was saddled with the loss in goal for the Dons, while freshman Andre Glasnovic saw his first action in a USF uniform, recording two saves in goal. West Virginia keeper Daniel Diaz (1-1-0) picked up the win.
The Dons return to action on Friday, Sept. 4 when they host Canisius in their home opener with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. from Negoesco Stadium.
