Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Dons Upended at Cal, 3-1

BERKELEY, Calif. - Jesus Del Toro came off the bench to notch his first goal of the year, but it was not enough for the USF men's soccer team as they lost to the Cal Bears on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium by a tally of 3-1.

Del Toro's strike tied the match at 1-1 in the 59th minute, giving the Dons (2-6-0) a jumpstart that they hoped would help them build some momentum against a tough Cal squad that came into the contest receiving votes in the NSCAA top-25. Del Toro took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity he had against Cal keeper Alex Mangels to find the back of the net.

The Bears (5-1-0) had jumped out to an early lead when Jose Carrera-Garcia scored an unassisted goal in the 12th minute when he bent a shot inside the far post off a free kick to give Cal a 1-0 advantage.

Cal then ended up taking the lead shortly after Del Toro tied it, as Christian Thierjung scored the first of this two goals, which ended up being the game winner, in the 62nd minute. Thierjung redirected a low cross into the box past USF keeper Andre Glasnovic.

Thierjung then added an insurance goal for the Bears three minutes later when he volleyed in another cross to the back post to give Cal their ultimate 3-1 advantage.

Both teams ended up with 11 shots on the day. USF outshot Cal 5-3 in the first frame, but Cal held the 10-8 advantage in shots in the second half.

Glasnovic collected five saves in goal for the Dons, while his counterpart, Mangels, had two for Cal.

The Dons were playing without usual start Davi Ramos, who was forced to sit out after receiving a red card in Friday's match at Stanford.

Aaron Lombardi led the USF offense with three shots, one of which was on goal, while Del Toro had a total of two shots on goal, including his score. Four other Dons collected two shots a piece.

USF returns to Negoesco Stadium on Thursday when they host CSU Bakersfield at 6 p.m.
