Dons Fall 3-0 at No. 21 New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of San Francisco men's soccer team was shutout 3-0 by the 21st-ranked New Mexico Lobos on Wednesday evening at the UNM Soccer Complex.

New Mexico (6-2-1) scored all three goals in the first half, one of which was an own goal by the Dons right before halftime in the 42nd minute. With the win, the Lobos avenge a 1-0 loss to the Dons when the teams last met in 2009.

"I think the first half we came out a little tentative and struggled to keep the ball," said second-year head coach Eddie Soto, "so we had to just keep defending. But the second half today was very good. We kept the ball, we had chances, our energy was good."

New Mexico outshot USF 9-4 in the first half, but the Dons (2-9-0) narrowed that gap to 8-6 as they created more chances in the second half. Overall, the Lobos held a 17-10 edge in shots.

Davi Ramos was the Dons' one-man offensive attack, firing off six shots on the night, including three shots on goal that were nabbed by UNM keeper Jason Beaulieu, who had six saves in the contest. Early in the first half, Ramos almost put the Dons on the board when he took a shot in the box that was blocked by a Lobo defender, then tried to follow up the rebound with a rocket that was stopped by Beaulieu.

Shortly after, New Mexico's Chris Wehan put the Lobos up 1-0 in the 17th minute when he connected off a cross in the box.

UNM added their second score in the 28th minute when Simon Spangenberg delivered a long strike straight on from about 35 yards out that found the left corner of the net.

Then in the 42nd minute, with UNM already leading 2-0, the Dons fell victim to an own goal after a Lobo cross deflected off a USF defender and past the diving USF keeper Ryan Buckingham to give New Mexico the 3-0 advantage that it would hold onto through the second half.

The Dons wrap up nonconference play and will enjoy a break before their West Coast Conference opener on Oct. 11 at Santa Clara.

"(The nonconference schedule) has been brutal, but we can take away a lot of lessons from it," added Soto. "There are a lot of positives we can take from tonight and build on. We have a really good team and as we look at starting WCC play, we're now 0-0. I hope the guys are excited about the opportunity for conference play, and we just have to keep building."

Buckingham, making his first start in goal since the second game of the year at West Virginia, recorded two saves in the loss.

New Mexico held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks on the night.

Kickoff for the Dons' WCC opener at Santa Clara will be 7 p.m. from Buck Shaw Stadium on Oct. 11.
