COLLEGE STATION, Texas - In its second marathon match in as many days, the San Francisco men's tennis team's fate was decided on Court 2 after nearly four hours. And on Sunday in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Fresno State managed a come-from-behind win to nab the 4-3 victory.
USF opened the day with the resounding 6-1 win at the No. 3 doubles spot as
Tynan Maguire and
Thomas Takemoto upended Patrik Pech and Yousseff Hassan. However, the Bulldogs would battle back to take the doubles point and the early lead in the match from the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Fresno State knotted the action in doubles play with a 6-4 victory for Jeremy Moser and Nikolas Papic, the Bulldogs' No. 2 duo. USF was up 5-0 in the action on court 1, but
Nils Skajaa and
Vasco Valverde could not keep their early momentum. Fresno State's top pair of Mantas Bugailiskis battled back Euan McIntosh before taking the tiebreaker 10-8 to secure the point.
"After this heart breaking loss of the doubles point the Dons showed great character just like our last match and fought hard," said head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida. "Again it came down to
Thomas Takemoto in the third set, and he wasn't able to stay as steady as his Bulldog opponent."
In singles play, Valverde's 6-4, 6-1 win over Hassan evened the score, and Skajaa notched the 6-4, 6-4 win over McIntosh to give USF its first lead of the day. Fresno State's Pech evened the tally after his victory at the No. 6 position as the score was knotted at 2-2. USF's
Ryan Marker quickly followed with the two-set takedown of Bugailiskis to make it 3-2 in favor of the Dons. A three-set battle between
Tynan Maguire and Jeremy Moser went the way of the Bulldog to again even the match with one court in action.
Fresno State's Nikolas Papic earned the 7-6 (7-3) win in the first set, but USF's
Thomas Takemoto fought back to win the 7-4 tiebreaker in the second to bring the match to the brink. Eventually, Papic came away with the 6-3 win to close the match as the Bulldogs earned the deciding point of the day.
With the tough defeat, USF stands at 1-4 on the season, while Fresno State improves to 1-1.
The Dons continue their spring slate away from home, but return to the Bay Area for close to home duals. In its next time on the court, USF takes on California with first serve from Berkeley scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
