The USF men's soccer team returns to the friendly confines of Negoesco Stadium this weekend for a pair of home contests against Cal State Fullerton and Air Force. The Dons and Titans will kickoff at 7 p.m. on Friday evening, while USF and Air Force are slated for a 1 p.m. start. Both games will be streamed live on TheW.tv with the USF broadcasting tandem of Charles Wollin (play-by-play) and Joe Dugan (analyst) on the call.
USF (2-3-0) suffered losses in both contests on the road this past weekend, a 2-1 defeat at Florida Gulf Coast, followed by a 2-0 loss at South Florida. FGCU went up early with a pair of goals in the 25th and 71st minutes and never looked back.
David Garrett netted the Dons' lone goal - his second of the season - in the 78th minute off a great cross from
Christian De Luna.
Against South Florida, the Bulls scored in the 24th and 43rd minutes and held USF scoreless from there.
Davi Ramos just missed a penalty kick try that was saved by the South Florida keeper and
Jordan Hughes had a chance deflect off the post in the 61st minute.
This weekend's action will feature a matchup with USF head coach
Eddie Soto's alma mater. Soto, a two-time All-American who holds the Cal State Fullerton single season goals record (18, 1994) and ranks second in program history with 38 goals, helped lead the Titans to their first-ever NCAA Tournament semi-final appearance in 1993.
Cal State Fullerton (3-3-0) comes into the week winners of three of their last four after defeating Memphis (4-1) and UT Rio Grande Valley (1-0) this past weekend at a tournament in San Diego. Alex Heilmann, the reigning Big West Offensive Player of the Week, ranks 4th in the NCAA with six goals on the year. USF holds a 12-4-2 all-time record over the Titans, but Cal State Fullerton won last year's meeting 3-0 in Fullerton.
Meanwhile, Air Force (3-2-0) has won three out of four as well with a pair of home wins this past weekend, a 6-0 shutout of Bryant and a 2-1 overtime win over UC Riverside. Tucker Bone and Klint Parker lead the offense with a pair of goals apiece. The Dons own a 5-3-3 edge in the all-time series, including a 2-0 win in their last meeting in 2013.
Looking ahead, the Dons will stay on their home pitch next weekend when they host 2015 National Champion and 25th-ranked Stanford at 7 p.m. on Sept. 23, followed by a 4 p.m. kickoff against UC Riverside on Sept. 25.
