THE RUNDOWN
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team made it four wins in a row on Friday, beating the University of San Diego Toreros, 1-0 on the road.
After a first half that saw both sides share the possession, with no clear-cut chances, it made for an entertaining second half. Sure enough, the second half saw both teams push to get a goal to put their side up, leading to a thrilling final 45 minutes.
The Toreros (8-5-3, 2-2-2 WCC) almost broke the deadlock from a pair of corners, but a collective effort from goalkeeper
Ruben Stuiver and a goal line clearance from the Dons' defense kept the sides level at 0-0.
In the 66th minute, following the defensive stand by USF (7-8, 4-1 WCC),
Bryce Kaminski was able to break down the right wing and fire a cross into the box that was headed home by
Sean Bowman to give USF a 1-0 lead.
Following the goal, San Diego ramped up the pressure, trying to break down the Dons' defensive back line. The final twenty minutes of the game was controlled by USD, outshooting the Dons 9-1 over that period, but USF's defense held strong, with Stuiver earning the clean sheet.
With this win, the Dons currently sit first in the West Coast Conference standings with 12 points, with both Portland and Pacific to play on Saturday.
