STANFORD, Calif. – The score doesn't tell the full story in Wednesday's match at No. 20 Stanford. The San Francisco men's tennis team battled into the evening before the Cardinal pulled off the 6-1 victory at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
With four singles matches that went the full three sets and a doubles point that was separated by a tiebreak, the Dons gave Stanford all they could handle in the mid-week match.
Johan Joenhagen and WCC Singles Player of the Week
Mert Zincirli teamed up to defeat the Stanford duo of Tom Fawcett and Yale Goldberg 7-6(6), but the Cardinal managed to pick up the doubles point with a win at No. 2, and a 7-6(1) victory at No. 3 over
Paul Giraud and
Ryan Marker.
In singles action, Giraud's three-setter against Roy Lederman went the way of the Dons, as the freshman from Locon, France, netted the 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory to earn the point on court 5. Playing from the No. 1 spot, Joenhagen recorded a first-set victory over Sameer Kumar before his Stanford foe rallied back for the win.
Oliver Poysti and
Woravin Kumthonkittikul each rallied to take victories in the second set and extend the match before their Cardinal opponents were able to record points for the 20th-ranked team in the country.
Despite the loss, USF head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida was impressed with the fight of his team.
"We had a really solid match, and the Cardinal was tougher in the end," he said. "We almost had the doubles point and Mert and JJ got a good win at No. 1. Paul stepped up huge to win his singles match in three sets and showed us good fight for a freshman with a solid win."
Up next, the Dons open WCC action on the road taking on BYU in Provo on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
