SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team defeated Sacramento State, 3-2, Sunday in an exhibition tune up before its regular season opener against UCLA on August 26 at Negoesco Stadium.
"We had a great first half. We possessed the ball really well and dictated the game," said Dons head coach
Eddie Soto.
The Dons led 1-0 at the half thanks to
Bryce Kaminski's goal in the 24
th minute sliding the ball under the legs of Sacramento State goalkeeper James Del Curto.
"That was a nice play by Bryce to finish it in the first chance. It was good to be rewarded for our first half play," said Soto.
The Dons continued to dictate the tempo in the second half, quickly going up 2-0 when preseason All-West Coast Conference selection
Aaron Lombardi scored in the 48
th minute on a scramble in front of the goal.
Four minutes later in the 52
nd minute, the Hornets scored its first goal of the match, cutting USF's lead to 2-1 when Cylus Sandoval headed a corner kick past Dons goalkeeper
Ruben Stuiver.
USF answered back minutes later when
Leon Schwarzer, another preseason all-conference nominee, found the back of the net to put the Dons ahead by two goals again, 3-1.
"The third goal by Leon was a beautiful goal," said Soto. "It was a combo play through Bryce and
Sean Bowman."
The Hornets cut the lead to 3-2 in the 67
th minute but the Dons withstood the last part of the game, bunkering down and grinded out to get the win.
USF will now set its sights on the regular season opener when it hosts UCLA on Saturday, August 26 at 7:00 p.m.
