USF Loses 3-1 To UC Davis

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. – On a hot day which saw the thermometer hit 108 degrees in the central valley, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team fell 3-1 to UC Davis on Monday.

"Our defense was horrendous, there's no way to sugarcoat it.  We've given up eight goals in two games.  The backline is capable of better," said Dons head coach Eddie Soto

For the second game in a row, the Dons (0-2-0) dug themselves a hole, falling behind 3-0.

The Aggies (1-1-0) scored in the eighth and 44th minutes on goals by Kyle Higgins and Onah Power to go up 2-0 at the half.  And just 10 seconds into the second half, UC Davis' Matt Barringer scored to make it 3-0.

"We need to tighten up the backline as our defending is poor both one-on-one and collectively.  You aren't going to win games unless you defend," said Soto.  "It was hot but UC Davis had to play in it too.  We just need to take ownership of our play."

In the second half, USF outshot the Aggies, 12-to-8.  It included a goal by pre-season all-conference honoree Aaron Lombardi who scored his first goal of the season on a free kick in the 60th minute.

"We played much better in the second half.  We created chances but you can't go down 3-0.  We are looking for leaders to push us through," said Soto.

The Dons will travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to play #13-ranked Indiana on Friday, September 1.
