Box Score BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The University of San Francisco men's soccer team came back from two goals down but its comeback bid fell short, losing 3-2 to No.17 Butler in the 2017 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Down 2-0, the Dons made a furious comeback in the latter stage of the match playing against another Top-25 ranked opponent, its third to start the season.
In the 81st minute, midfielder Leon Schwarzer chipped in a cross from eight yards out on a Aaron Lombardi cross. It was Schwarzer's team leading third goal of the season to cut the Bulldogs lead to 2-1.
Less than two minutes later, Sean Bowman's header from six yards out found the back of the net off a Manny Padilla cross to tie the game up 2-2. For the junior midfielder, it was his second goal in as many games helping him earn a spot to the All-Tournament team along with fellow Don, Bar Twito.
"We did well to come back, to show character and fight," said USF head coach Eddie Soto. "We had a lot of good spells but unfortunately, we have nothing to show for it."
Just as quickly as the Dons came back to tie the match, the Bulldogs got the game winner in the 84th minute when Kieran Geldenhuys' header off a corner kick put the Bulldogs up for good, 3-2.
"We took a play off in the corner kick and our inability to make plays defensively hurt us again," said Soto. "Our focus and concentration is lacking defensively right now."
For the game, the Dons outs hot the Bulldogs 15-to-13 with Bowman leading the way with five shots, three of which were on frame.
San Francisco dropped its season record to 0-4-0 playing three of those against Top-25 ranked teams (No. 21 UCLA in the opener, No. 4 Indiana in the last game), while No.17 Butler improved to 2-1-0.
Next up for USF is another road trip, this time to San Diego to play San Diego State and Cal State Fullerton on September 8th and 10th.
