Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

MSOC | Bowman’s Goal Beats No. 8 Bruins On The Road

LOS ANGELES — Any doubt that the San Francisco men's soccer team is ready to play with the best in 2018 was wiped away Sunday, as the Dons shut out and took down the No. 8 team in the country on the road, beating No. 8 UCLA, 1-0, on a second half goal by Sean Bowman at Wallace Annenberg Stadium.

Bowman's goal came in the 52nd minute after a scoreless first half between USF (2-0-1) and UCLA (2-1-0). Bowman scored on a counter attack, where Jorge Ruiz was able to take the ball up the right side and cross it, finding Bowman on the left for the score. The goal was the first that UCLA had allowed all season. And the defeat at the hands of the Dons was the Bruins' first loss after winning two straight to start the year.

The Bruins looked for every opportunity to capitalize over the Dons but their 18 shot attempts weren't enough. Dons goalkeeper Ruben Stuiver made eight crucial saves, three of those being captured in the last five minutes of play. UCLA was issued five yellow cards in the game, three in the second half.

The first half was physical for both San Francisco and UCLA as the Dons tallied 13 fouls and the Bruins with 14 in the first 45 minutes of play. That included a yellow card for Bowman at the 18-minute mark. Four different Dons had a shot attempt in the first half. Bowman and Bruins' Mohammed Kamara both led their offense with three shots and two shots on goal in the first.

HEAD COACH QUOTES
"I felt that we executed our game plan well. Guys did a tremendous job breaking the rhythm as they are a good possession team. Finishing the goal that we did was a byproduct of the entire game. We defended really well and created chances and the goal was the outcome of that. We are going to enjoy the win, but not for to long as we need to prepare for Stanford on Friday who are three-time defending national champions. We need a lot of support on Friday night at Negoesco Stadium." - Eddie Soto, USF Head Coach
