SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After a tightly contested match, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (3-1-1) battled to the brink against CSU Bakersfield (1-1-2), but ultimately fell to the Roadrunners, 1-0, on Thursday night at Negoesco Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- The contest opened up with a lot of defense, with the first shot of the match not coming until the ninth minute by Constantinos Michaelides.
- As the half moved along, San Francisco continued to attack was Rylan Smith, Arjan Dosanjh and Gabriel Bracken Serra all attempted shots between the 17th and 22nd minutes.
- As the half moved along, the two teams exchanged shots but CSU Bakersfield was the first to get on the board as midfielder Kevin Estrada found the back of the net on an assist from Adrian Jogerst in the 37th minute.
- Wrapping up the first 45 minutes of action, the half ended with defense as neither team was able to get off a shot following the lone goal of the period. At the break, the Roadrunners maintained their 1-0 lead.
- Coming out of the locker room, San Francisco started the second half with some energy as Michaelides, Max Hamelink and Zane Alafranji all fired shots in the opening six minutes of the period.
- Throughout the second half, the Dons attacked often as they outshot CSU Bakersfield 12-2 in the second period. Despite final attempts from Smith and Dosanjh, San Francisco could not find the back of the net down the stretch as the Roadrunners hung on to take a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Once again, Olivier Sylvain saw all 90 minutes on the pitch, having played in every minute of the season so far for the Dons. Max Hamelink also played all 90 minutes of the match for the first time this season.
- Notably, Hamelink fired off four shots tonight, his most in a match since tallying five shots at California on Oct. 15 last year.
- Eight different Dons attempted at least one shot in the match as the 18 total shots attempted by the green and gold were their second-most this season.
