After posting a 16-12 record and chalking up victories over powerhouses Notre Dame, St. Mary's,and Loyola Marymount, Jim Brovelli and his Dons return hoping to make the 1989-1990 season even better. This team, which was labeled a "finesse" team last year after finishing last in the West Coast Conference (formerly the WCAC) in blocked shots and second to last in rebounding, may be different. With John Glavan and Ben Klash, both 6' 10" freshmen, the Dons have their biggest front line in Jim Brovelli's five-year tenure. They also have All-Conference Honorable Mention senior Joel DeBortoli, who is a strong candidate for All-WCC honors this year. Seniors Kevin Ellis, Ken Hart, Shawn Sykes, Kevin Bell, and Jeff Green will all be instrumental in the success of the Dons this season.
After leading Portland most of the way, the San Francisco Dons fell in overtime 89-78 Saturday night in what was the last game in Memorial Gymnasium for seniors Kevin Bell, Joel DeBortoli, Kevin Ellis, Jeff Green, Ken Hart, and Shawn Sykes. The Dons played a fine game until the final two minutes when they couldn't hit the free throws that would have put the Pilots away. Portland senior Josh Lowery scored in the closing seconds of regulation tying the game at 71 and the Pilots went on to win (TheFoghorn).
