Visser said he expects McLaughlin, entering her third USF season, "to stabilize the defensive part of our game." McLaughlin has been named captain of the Lady Dons. Visser also looks for help from returnees Joan Harrington, Sarah Cowey and Sharon Breville, who "developed into one of our best defenders last year."

Echoes from the Hilltop: In a city full of free spirits, you figure accommodating one more would not be a big deal. But when freshman Sharon Breville decided to come here from her native St. Louis, you could just see the whole city flinch. You see, San Francisco's never had a free spirit as active as Sharon. You never know where you'll see her next. If she's not participating in Veteran's Day Parade with the ROTC drill team, then maybe she's playing a key part in what success the Dons soccer team has had. If she's not on the soccer field, then maybe she's serving refreshments beside it. Maybe she's passing out parking permits at the front gate or doing graphic design. If it's 2:00 a.m.. you don't even want to know where she is. In classic fashion, Breville has made San Francisco her home. St. Louis just couldn't keep up. "Tell everyone the Midwest is a nice place to visit, but you don't want to live there," she proclaimed. "1 needed to get away from the Midwest, so I thought I would pick the most exciting city." Breville decided on USF because of the St. Ignatius Institute, a focal point for many out-of-state students, and the opportunity to study graphic design at the Academy of Art. She was not discouraged by the high cost of tuition even though she knew she would have to support herself, since her parents could not afford the tuition. That's where all the jobs come in.

But first on a walk to Lone Mountain early in the semester, she ran into soccer Coach Erik Visser. "I thought he was some guy trying to make conversation," said Breville. No, just a guy trying to make up a team, and what better person to run into than Breville, whose Notre Dame HS won the Missouri State Championship last year in women's soccer with her as a key member. Sharon ended up starting all but two games, and became one of the Dons most aggressive midfielders. But with the end of the season coming up maybe she needed some additional adventure, so she joined ROTC six weeks ago. Also she was tired of searching for jobs around campus, and decided she wanted to put her "tremendous patriotism" to good use. Although she had the misfortune of contracting poison oak ("Not too many questions about that, please") on her first field training exercise, which caused her to miss two games, she found the whole experience fantastic and exciting. See, she is a little thrown-off.

But that was not enough, so she also served refreshments at the men's soccer matches and three weeks ago got a job with Public Safety. Last Saturday while many enjoyed the sunshine, she got up at 7:00 a.m. for ROTC training at 8:00 a.m., then got back to school at 11:30 a.m., just in time to change and go work at the soccer game for both ends of the WCAC doubleheader. At 6:00 p.m., she relaxed by doing a little Public Safety for a couple of hours. Does she have any time for fun? Just ask Ann Scullion about her exhibitionism. Also, jogging around campus at 2:00 a.m. has got to be fun. So what philosophy does it take to do all this plus play Lady Dons softball this spring? "Good times, good friends and a little bit of homework," she said. "That's what it's all about (TheFoghorn)."
