After six grueling weeks, the University of San Francisco's Men's and Women's Cross Country season came to a close the same place it began, at the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont. On one of the more demanding courses on the West Coast, senior Franck Tardivat finished eleventh in the West Coast Conference Championships, earning him All-Conference Honors as the Men's team finished sixth in the conference outdistancing Pepperdine and St. Mary's. Senior John Logan finished 27th overall and Freshman Jeff Scharosch 40th as the Don Harriers escaped the cellar for the first time in their history.
The Women's squad was paced by sophomore Kari McCallum's third place finish and for the second year in a row, she earned All-Conference Honors. Sophomore Cindy Donoghue came in 25th, but unfortunately the Dons occupy the cellar, narrowly missing seventh place by five points.
The program looks optimistic for the future as six members of the Men's squad are freshman and will be expected to improve in the coming years. The Team will lose Tardivat, Logan, and Pat Mauro to graduation. Tardivat will leave the Hilltop without a doubt, the finest runner in the history of the University. The Women's outlook for next year is just as optimistic as they will only lose one runner, Loretta Fleming to graduation. McCallam who is only expected to get better.
"I'm proud of these kids," said Head Coach John Drocco, "without scholarships they remained dedicated throughout the year and turned in a respectable performance when it counted, they should be commended (TheFoghorn)."
This USF tennis team has proven in past matches that it has the talent to be reckoned with and is not easily dominated, but they have had organizational problems all year long. While a number of players possess considerable skill on the court, there has been a shortage of players, in general, contributing to their inability to challenge for a title. The team consists of Loretta Fleming, Judy Lin, Anna Choy, Carrie Callahan, and Erin O'Neil. Says Fleming, "I eat, sleep, go to school, and play tennis." The women's team recently defeated Menlo College. Led by Head Coach John Drocco, the players are proceeding through the season seemingly undaunted by the points they have against them. They use the Lone Mountain courts for both practice and competition. Granted, USF has more monetary problems than it can handle, but tennis was left out of the Koret project and the vote from the tennis team is for some new facilities (TheFoghorn).
