Box Score (San Francisco) - San Francisco women's soccer played strong for a half against No. 22 Cal, but wilted under a barrage of shots in the second half, dropping a 6-1 decision in non-conference action on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (3-6-0) had some chances - especially in the first half, but the Bears (7-1-0) capitalized on seemingly every opportunity and have now out-scored their opponents 30-7 in 2011.
USF trailed 1-0 with 45 minutes in the books. The Dons fired four shots, three on target, while Cal shot 10 times with five on frame in the opening period. The second half was an offensive clinic by the Bears as they connected for five second half goals off 12 shots. San Francisco surrendered a pair of penalty kicks after the intermission.
"I thought we battled a very good team for 50 minutes," USF head coach Mark Carr said. "This was their only match of the week and they were well-rested and we were a little banged up after playing Friday night. Cal is just extremely deep – they made 15 subs in the second half. We just don't have that kind of depth. We still have to do a better job of not making mistakes in important moments of the game. We will go to work this week to get better again. This team is capable of more."
Christina Moberg found the back of the net for the third time this season in the 56th minute to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Golden Bears. It was the second goal in two matches for Moberg who has scored three times in her last five contests.
Cal scored four unanswered from there to record its seventh straight win. The Bears held a 22-10 shot advantage and a 12-8 shots on target edge.
San Francisco returns to action when it travels to the Pacific Northwest to take on Seattle U. Friday, September 23. Match time against the Redhawks is set for 4:00 PM at Championship Field.
