(Seattle, Wash.) - The University of San Francisco women's soccer team opened its final weekend of non-conference action with a 1-0 loss to Seattle Friday in the Emerald City. The Dons fell victim to an own goal early in the first period to seal their fate.

With the loss, San Francisco falls to 3-7 overall on the season, while Seattle improved to 8-3.

"I think the difference in the game today was that Seattle was a little bit more hungry," said USF head coach Mark Carr. "They competed a little harder in the first 10 minutes of the match. We came out slow and really didn't get it going until 15 minutes into the half."

At 6:37 in the match, a Redhawk crossed the ball towards the goal. The ball began to bend towards the goal, when it deflected off the Dons' goalie to go into the net.

"I can't fault the effort, work ethic and fight we displayed for the rest of the game," added Carr. We have to understand, though, that we have to play a full 90 minutes every game."

San Francisco fired seven shots on the match, but it Seattle's offense managed 21, including 11 in the second half. The Redhawks added seven corner kicks; the Dons recorded two.

Jaciara Mello led the Dons with three shots, while Tyler Campagna added two.

"It was a very even game and I felt we had the better chances in the second half", said Carr. "I really felt that Seattle only had one dangerous chance getting in behind us in the second half. A lot of their shots came from distance. They were very dangerous one the counter, had a lot of pace up top and I thought our backs did a better job dealing with their service in the second half.

"We need to pick ourselves up quickly, refocus and prepare for a very good Washington team, which will not be easy. We will be ready to play Sunday."

USF returns to the pitch Sunday afternoon when they face Washington at 4 p.m. in Seattle.
