Dons Sweep Columbia For First Win Of The Season

SAN FRANCISCO — Outside hitter Vendula Strakova powered the University of San Francisco to a three-set sweep against Columbia in the Dons' opening match of the USF Ascis/Powerade Challenge on Friday night in War Memorial Gym.

USF held Columbia to a .020 hitting percentage in route to 25-12, 25-12 and 25-23 wins.

Stravoka, playing in her first match for the Dons, hammed home 13 kills to lead USF's attack. The freshman hit an impressive .480 with only one attacking error after opening the match with six kills in seven swings. She also totaled seven digs, two blocks and two service aces.

Classmate Valentina Zaloznik collected nine kills on .400 hitting with three digs and three blocks, while Jocelyn Levig added eight kills and six digs.

USF setter Joan Caloiaro notched her third consecutive double-double of the season with 38 assists and 16 digs to go along with two service aces. Libero Rebecca Kopilovitch also totaled 16 digs with two service aces.

The Dons (1-3) host Providence (2-4) at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3 for their second game of the tournament. USF also hosts Memphis (5-0) at 7 p.m. later that night.
