Just the Facts, Ma'am

  • USF is coming off a 72-40 exhibition win over Missouri Southern on Nov. 2, marking their only exhibition contest of the season. In that game, the Dons were led by senior Mel Khlok's 16 points on 50 percent shooting and a game-high four steals. She was assisted on offense by Alicia Scafidi's 13 points and seven rebounds along with Aundrea Gordon's 12-point, 6-asssist outing. The Dons defense held the Lions to 27.7 percent shooting and forced 29 turnovers in the victory.
  • The USF roster features five newcomers joining eight letterwinners from a 2011-12 team that finished the season 5-25 (3-13 WCC).  The Dons' top returners heading into the season include Khlok (8.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.5 apg, 52 steals), Bailey Barbour (5.6 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 32 blk) and Jamie Katuna (7.3 ppg, 1.4 rpg, .429 3PT%).

The Azzi File

  • Third-year USF coach Jennifer Azzi can tout a gold medal, an NCAA championship, an illustrious professional career in the United States and abroad as well as a spot in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on her resume. She is still widely considered one of the best women's basketball players to ever play the game. In the midst of rebuilding the Dons program, she sports a 9-50 career record through two seasons.

Scouting the Dons

  • “Our team is going to be really hard to scout this year because of the offense we run. Everybody can score; everybody's a threat. If you stop one thing, someone is going to have a counter move to it.” - Khlok on USF

Know the Foe

  • The Wahine are led by first-year coach Laura Beeman, who enters her first season of Division I head coaching after two seasons as the assistant at Southern California. Prior to that, she was at the helm of the Mt. San Antonio College Mounties from 1994-2010 where she compiled an overall record of 3901-110.
  • Hawaii returns six letterwinners from a year ago, and is led by junior all-WAC forward Kamila (Jackson) Martin who finished last season ranked 13th in the nation with 10.6 rebounds a game. She picked up 16 double-doubles in her sophomore campaign. Hawaii is coming of an 11-19 season and a 6-8 conference record in the WAC.

California Connection
  • The Wahine roster features six women who have ties to the state, an equal number to the USF squad. Returning to their home state for this game are Monica DeAngelis (Santa Monica), Sydney Haydel (Woodland Hills),  Destiny King (Long Beach) Martin (Oakland), Stephanie Ricketts (San Jose) and Marissa Wimbley (Elk Grove).

USF and Hawaii – The Series
  • In a series dating back to 1977-78, the Dons and the Wahine have faced off seven times with the last coming on the Big Island in 2009-10, a 58-48 Wahine win. The last time Hawaii competed on USF's home court at War Memorial Gym was in the 2005-06 season.  Hawaii holds a slim 4-3 advantage in the overall series record.
