SAN FRANCSICO – Led by four double-digit scoring efforts and a 29-point outing for senior
Mel Khlok, the San Francisco women's basketball team bested the San Jose State Spartans 92-64 on Saturday at War Memorial Gym.
In order to notch its sixth win of the season and eclipse the total number of victories posted by the 2011-12 team, the Dons took a tough loss at Cal State Northridge earlier in the month and turned it into a positive learning experience. USF now sits at 6-4 on the season and is riding back-to-back wins for the second time this year.
“What I'm the most pleased about is we faced a very similar zone against Northridge and we did not do well against it,” coach
Jennifer Azzi said after the win. “In order to beat a zone, you can't go one on one. You've really got to play as a team. I was proud of the way our team was able to learn through the course of the week and they really shared the ball and played well together.”
USF shot 47.8 percent from the field and sunk 21-of-26 from the line, a season-best in both attempts and free throw percentage. The Dons held San Jose State to 32.8 percent shooting from the field and the swarming defense caused 21 Spartans turnovers that led to 23 points. The Dons sliced into the paint for 34 if its 92 points and outrebounded the Spartans by a 55-32 margin. USF's 18 total assists from nine players represents a season high.
USF's team effort was led by Khlok's 29 points on 9-of-14 shooting that was complemented by a 7-of-8 performance from the line, nine rebounds and a game-high five assists. She got going early, swishing in her first trey less than two minutes into the game to stop the Spartans' 4-0 start. She went on to finish with 20 points in the half as USF held onto the 56-34 advantage at the break, riding a 9-0 run into the locker room.
“I'm known as a shooter, but me and Coach [Azzi] kind of talked about let's let the shot come to you and drive and get your team involved before you worry about yourself,” Khlok said of her best offensive performance of the year. “I just want to help my team win games and whatever I can do to help that is what I'm going to do. So I feel like what my focus was today was to break down the San Jose State zone and we did that and things just came.”
The Dons continued to dominate in the second, growing the lead to 67-39 on a
Zhané Dikes jumper with 15 minutes to play in the contest. The lead would bump into the 30s when
Alexa Hardick scooped up an offensive rebound and gave the Dons and extra possession.
Bailey Barbour's ensuing layup gave USF the 78-48 lead with 9:34 to play in the game.
USF maintained down the stretch to post its biggest win over a Division I foe in the Azzi era as the team took the 28-point victory over San Jose State and extended its winning streak over the Spartans to six-consecutive games.
“It's just good for us as coaches to see that the things that we've been doing in practice and we've been working on translate to how we play in the game,” Azzi said.
Along with Khlok's impressive performance, sophomore
Alicia Scafidi nabbed her first career double-double after being inserted into the starting lineup two games ago, scoring 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.
Aundrea Gordon posted 12 points in the win and Dikes finished with 10 points and a game-high five steals.
The mark of back-to-back 90-plus point games has not been duplicated by the USF offense since the start of the 2000-01 season. That year, the Dons posted season-opening wins over UC Riverside, 105-51, and Cal State Northridge, 96-56, to accomplish this feat.
San Jose State was led by 16 points by Ta'Rea Cunnigan, who entered the game tied for 21st in the nation in points per game with a 20.2 average. The Dons limited Cunnigan to just four baskets off of 18 attempts from the field and a 1-for-6 outing from beyond the arc as the Spartans dropped to 3-7 on the year.
Up next for USF is a date with the Dons' fifth Big West foe of the season in the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Dons travel to San Luis Obispo for a Tuesday tipoff at 7 p.m. from Robert A. Mott Gymnasium.
