(San Francisco) – A late second half surge from San Francisco fell just short, as BYU escaped historic War Memorial Gym with an 85-84 victory, on Thursday night. Matt Carlino's floater in the lane with 18.9 seconds left proved to be the game-winner for the Cougars (22-6, 10-3 WCC).
USF (17-11, 7-7 WCC) mounted a furious comeback with under two minutes to play, capped by
Rashad Green's pull-up jumper in the lane, which gave the Dons their first lead of the night, 84-83, with only 38 seconds remaining in the game. San Francisco had three chances to win the game on their final possession, but were unable to convert as time expired.
Five Dons finished in double figures, led by
Angelo Caloiaro's 23 points. Joining Caloiaro were
Perris Blackwell with 18,
Cody Doolin with 16, Green with 12, and
Cole Dickerson with 10. Blackwell posted his 11th double-double on the season, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
After a frantic first half that saw multiple scoring streaks by both teams, BYU went into the locker room leading by five, 49-44.
Both teams shot the ball well from the floor in the first frame, as BYU held a slight advantage .571 (20-35) over USF .567 (17-30). The difference came from distance, as the Cougars shot an impressive .600 (6-10) from beyond the arc.
Carlino led all scorers at the half with 22 points to tie his career-high, which came against UC Santa Barbara earlier in the year. The freshman didn't stop there as he scored eight more in the second half to lead all scorers with 30 points.
Doolin led the way for the Dons in the first half with 11 points on .666 (4-6) shooting from the floor including .600 (3-5) from behind the arc. Blackwell cemented his presence inside with 10 points and five rebounds, but was sent to the sideline with early foul trouble.
San Francisco returns to play this Saturday, February 18, at 5:00 p.m. as they take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs on a game televised by Comcast Sports Net Bay Area.
