Dons Win First Set, Fall to USD in Four in Opening WCC Match

Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three San Francisco Dons posted double-digit kill totals and Leanna Ludes registered her fourth double-double, but USF came up short, losing 1-3 to No. 18 University of San Diego on Thursday night.

The Dons (9-5, 0-1 WCC) won the first set 35-33 in dramatic fashion, but the Toreros (9-2, 1-0 WCC) took control after that winning 21-25, 20-25, 22-25.

Freshman Ester De Vries put the finishing touch on the extended first set to give the Dons a 1-0 lead. De Vries finished one dig shy of a double-double with 11 kills and nine digs on the night.

Malina Terrell and Jocelyn Levig added 15 and 14 kills, respectively, to go along with Ludes' 42-assist, 15-dig double-double. The senior setter is now averaging 10.33 assists per set. Libero Rebecca Kopilovitch recoreded her sixth consecutive match with at least 13 digs, posting 19 on Thursday night.

Four Toreros tallied double-digit kill totals, led by Katie Hoekman and Carrie Baird's 14 kills.

The Dons held a distinct 14-to-8 block advantage, but were unable to overcome the Toreros attack. After winning five of their last six matches, including two distinctive wins over California, the Dons fell to 0-1 in West Coast Conference play.
