USF Returns Home Still in Search of First WCC Victory
USF (7-10, 0-4 WCC) will try to get on the winning side of the WCC ledger for the first time Thursday night when the Dons play host to the Santa Clara Broncos (12-6, 1-3 WCC) at Memorial Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. and the game will be carried live on Comcast SportsNet California with Barry Tompkins and Dan Belluomini calling the action from courtside.
USF has lost four straight games by six points or less (20 total) while Santa Clara has dropped three in a row, including a 82-64 home loss to BYU on Saturday,
Santa Clara defeated USF 74-69 on Jan. 2 at the Leavey Center in the conference opener for both teams.

USF-Santa Clara Series
In a series that dates back to the 1908-09 season, Santa Clara leads the all-time series with USF, 110-101.
Santa Clara holds a 68-66 advantage in WCC games dating back to the formation of the conference in 1952-53. The two schools have met six times in WCC Tournament competition with SCU holding a 4-2 edge. In the only post-season game played between the two programs, Santa Clara claimed a 95-91 decision on The Hilltop in the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Santa Clara won the first meeting in the season series two weeks ago at the Leavey Center, 74-69, however, the Dons have won six out of the last 10 meetings with the Broncos.
USF and Santa Clara, along with Saint Mary's, Pacific and San Jose State, are charter members of the West Coast Conference. USF and Santa Clara played the first-ever WCC game at the Cow Palace on Jan. 6, 1953 with the Dons coming out on top, 59-48.

First Time Around With Santa Clara
  • Dropped the WCC opener to Santa Clara, 74-69 at the Leavey Center on Jan. 2.
  • Dons trailed by as many as 19 points (48-29) in the second half but rallied to cut the lead to 2 at 67-65 with 1:26 left.
  • Three USF players scored in double-figures, led by Cole Dickerson, who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season...Cody Doolin finished with 16 while Avry Holmes came off the bench to add 12.
  • The Dons shot 47.3 percent from the field, including 53.8 percent in the second half, but were outrebounded 42-33 and victimized by 12 turnovers.
  • Kevin Foster led all Santa Clara scorers with 21 points while Marc Trasolini added 14.

Last Time Out: Takeaways From the Saint Mary's Game
  • Dropped a 78-72 decision at Saint Mary's Saturday night...marked the Dons fourth straight loss by six points or less and 15th consecutive defeat at the hands of the Gaels.
  • Trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half at 27-17 at the 6:25 mark but went on a 19-8 run to take a 36-35 lead at intermission.
  • USF trailed by just four points at 66-62 with 2:03 left but the Gaels made 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to hold off the Dons.
  • Cody Doolin scored 13 of his team-high 16 points in the second half...De'End Parker finished with 15, including a 70-footer as time expired.
  • Nine USF players got into the scoring column.
  • USF shot 51 percent from the field but the Gaels made 24-of-27 free throws and outrebounded the Dons, 31-23.

That Close
Of USF's 10 losses this season, eight have been by 10 points or fewer, including the last four which have been decided by six points or less. In three of USF's four conference losses, the Dons trailed by two points with 31 seconds or less remaining in the game.

Home and Road
USF is 5-3 at home this season and is a 39-16 (.709) record in its last 55 home games dating back to the 2009-10 season. The Dons are 46-21 (.686) in Memorial Gymnasium in five seasons under head coach Rex Walters.
The Dons are 1-4 in true road games this season, with the only win coming at American on Nov. 19. Losses followed at Pacific, Nevada, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's.

Lineup Shuffle
Head coach Rex Walters employed his third starting lineup of the season vs. BYU, as sophomore Chris Adams joined Cody Doolin, Cole Dickerson, Tim Derksen and Tao Xu in the starting five. De'End Parker, who started the first 14 games of the year, sat out the BYU game with an aggravated wrist.
Adams made his third straight start Saturday against Saint Mary's and finished with nine points.

Leaders in Their Field
Three USF players -- Cole Dickerson, Cody Doolin and De'End Parker -- rank in the top-25 nationally in various statistical categories.
Dickerson ranks eighth the nation in rebounding, averaging 11.0 boards a game.
Parker ranks 10th nationally in three-point field goal percentage at 51.2 (21-for-41) while Doolin is averaging 6.2 assists per game to rank 21st among the national leaders.

From the Floor
USF is shooting 48.1 percent (210-for-436) from the field over the last eight games, including a season-best 55.9 percent (33-for-59) vs. Dominican. The Dons are 5-3 this season when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor, with its only losses in those eight games coming against Ole Miss (50.9), BYU (50.0) and Saint Mary's (51.0).
USF currently ranks third in the WCC in field goal percentage at 46.0 percent.
Freshman Tim Derksen ranks fourth in the WCC in field goal percentage at 55.6 percent (60-for-108).

From Long Distance
USF leads the WCC and ranks 16th nationally in three-point field goal percentage at 39.8 (125-for-314).
The Dons have made nine or more three-pointers in six games this season, including three of the last four contests vs. Santa Clara (9-for-22), BYU (11-for-24) and Saint Mary's (9-for-18).
De'End Parker leads the WCC and ranks 10th nationally in three-point field goal percentage at 51.2 while Avry Holmes ranks third in the conference at 46.7. Cole Dickerson ranks 15th at 39.2.

Board Work
USF has been outrebounded in all four conference games vs. Santa Clara (33-42), BYU (34-38), San Diego (27-34) and Saint Mary's (23-31). The Dons have been outboarded in 10 of the last 12 contests dating back to the St. John's game on Dec. 4.
The Dons rank eighth in the WCC in rebound average at 33.9 per game and rebound margin (+0.6). USF also ranks ninth in the WCC in offensive rebounds at 8.5 per game.
The Dons opened the season by outrebounding its first five opponents by a margin of 11.4 per game but lost the battle of the boards in its next six games vs. St. John's (34-37), Pacific (25-36), Nevada (30-45), Holy Cross (34-41), San Diego State (25-34), Ole Miss (27-33).

Charity Stripe Turnaround
USF is shooting 71.4 (85-for-119) percent from the line over the last seven games after converting on just 61.1 (132-for-216) of its charity tries over the first 10 games of the year. However, the Dons still rank ninth in the WCC in free throw percentage at 64.8.
Cody Doolin ranks fourth in the WCC in free throw percentage at 86.7 percent (65-for-75) while the rest of the team is shooting 58.4 percent (152-for-260) from the line.

Defensive Doings
USF is allowing 68.7 points a game, which ranks seventh among WCC teams. Opponents are shooting 44.0 percent from the floor, which is the highest percentage allowed in the conference. The Dons also rank ninth in the conference in blocks (1.8) and eighth in steals (5.1) per game.

Dickerson's Doubles
Cole Dickerson is averaging a double-double 16 games into the 2012-13 campaign, as the junior forward from Federal Way, Wash. is scoring 15.2 points and grabbing 11.0 rebounds per game.
Dickerson has posted eight double-doubles in 17 games this season against Stanford (11-19), Cal State-East Bay (14-15), Columbia (10-14), Montana (19-20), Holy Cross (17-17), San Diego State (15-12), Dominican (30-10) and Santa Clara (17-12) and was a rebound away from double-doubles in four other games against Pacific (14-9), Nevada (11-9), East Tennessee State (19-9) and BYU (22-9).
The last USF player to average a double-double for an entire season was Darrell Tucker, when he scored 18.9 points and grabbed 10.1 rebounds a game in 2001-02.
Dickerson also posted double-doubles in both exhibition games against San Francisco State (21-15) and UNC-Pemboke (24-10).
Dickerson averaged 7.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg in 34 games last season, including one start.

Doolin Climbing USF's Career Assist Chart
Junior point guard Cody Doolin ranks third in the WCC and 21st nationally in assists per game (6.2). Doolin's career assist total now stands at 355, which ranks third on USF's all-time list behind Orlando Smart (902) and Gerald Walker (400).

Dons Ironmen
Cody Doolin is averaging 35.1 minutes per game, which ranks third among all conference players, while Cole Dickerson ranks fourth, averaging 34.1 minutes per game. Doolin has started all 85 games in his USF career.

Debuts
Eight players have made their USF debuts this season, including freshmen Tim Derksen, Coltin Gelb, Matt Christiansen, Avry Holmes, Tao Xu and redshirt freshman Mark Tollefsen.
De'End Parker, who spent last year at UCLA and Frank Rogers, who played at Cabrillo College, have also made their USF debuts this season.

Winning Ways
USF is 41-30 (.577) in their last 71 games following a 5-9 start to the 2010-11 season. USF has also made back-to-back postseason appearances under Rex Walters, competing in the CIT in 2010-11 and the CBI last season.
Last season, the Dons finished with an overall record of 20-14, marking the program's first 20-win season since 1981-82 (25-6).

USF Impressive in Overtime Under Walters
USF boasts an 8-1 record in overtime games under head coach Rex Walters. The Dons only overtime loss came at Colorado State, 91-75 in the 2009-10 season.

Staff Changes
Head coach Rex Walters has announced Brent Crews has been promoted from video coordinator to assistant coach. Michael Lee will assume the title of special assistant to the head coach.
