Just the Facts, Ma'am
  • San Francisco (7-6) kicks off West Coast Conference play in its first game of 2013 against Bay Area rival, Saint Mary's. The Gaels enter the contest with an 8-4 non-conference record, finishing up with a win over Gorge Washington on Dec. 30.
  • The Dons and Gaels are 1-2 in scoring, with junior Jackie Nared's 19.1 points per game for Saint Mary's edging our USF senior Mel Khlok's 16.8 points a night for the top spot in the WCC non-conference standings.

In It to Win It

  • USF's 7-6 start is the best opening to a season since the Jennifer Azzi era began in 2010-11.  The last time the Dons were above the .500 mark 13 games into the season was 2007-08, when the Dons entered conference action with a 9-6 non-conference record. That season, the team went on to finish 14-16 overall and notched its last double-digit win tally on the year.

Know the Foe

  • Along with junior Jackie Nared's 19.1 points per game, Saint Mary's has two other double-digit scorers in Danielle Mauldin (14.8 ppg) and Kate Gaze (10.3 ppg). Mauldin, a junior from Hercules, Calif., is pulling down an average of 10.8 rebounds a contest, to give her a double-double average though 12 games. Nared is close behind in her efforts on the boards, with 9.8 rebounds a night.
  • As a team, the Gaels are leading all WCC schools in rebounding, pounding the glass a total of 45.7 times a night and picking up 10.2 more rebounds a game than its opponents.  Saint Mary's put together a string of five-consecutive wins in the middle of its non-conference schedule, consecutively beating Butler, Chattanooga, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis.

USF and Saint Mary's—The Series

  • The Dons and the Gaels have met 55 times in the series that dates back to the 1985-86 season. Saint Mary's holds the 32- 23 overall advantage, but USF pulled off a 66-64 victory on Jan. 23, 2012, to snap an eight-game streak of Saint Mary's wins. In that contest, Mel Khlok posted a career-high 36 points on  10-of-12 shooting. She sunk 6-of-7 from long-range and drained 6-of-7 attempts from the line in the winning effort.

Pacific Remix

  • USF couldn't overcome a 49-25 rebounding differential as the Pacific Tigers held serve in Stockton in a 75-59 win. The Tigers, future WCC foes beginning in the 2013-14 season, lead the Big West Conference with a 9-2 record.

League Leaders

  • The Dons rank second in the WCC in field goal percentage defense (.366), second in rebounding offense (42.8 per game) and third in rebounding margin (+4.2).
  • Individually, Mel Khlok is in the top 15 of nearly every statistical category, including scoring (16.8 ppg—2nd), 3-pointers per game (2.4—2nd), steals (2.6—4th), field goal percentage (.463—8th), free throw percentage (.722—10th) and assists (3.0—T-13) . Her 35.5 minutes per game is tops in the conference.
  • Alicia Scafidi  and Taylor Proctor come in to conference play in ninth and 10th in rebounding, combining for 13.9 boards a night, and Taj Winston's 5.5 is good for 15th. Along with Khlok, three Dons are in the Top 15 for field goal percentage (Zhane Dikes—.417, 12th, Proctor—.407, 15th).
