SAN DIEGO, Calif.—A goal in the first half gave the Dons momentum but the goal in the second half put the game away as they were able to beat San Diego 2-0 in West Coast Conference action on Friday night.
The Dons defense was able to contain San Diego in the half and it allowed their offense to get some early opportunities. They finally cashed in just before halftime.
In the 44th minute, Kyle MacLeod took a pass on the left from David Romney and his kick went low and to the far post for the score, giving USF the 1-0 lead.
San Francisco (5-5-2, 2-2-1 WCC) tacked onto its lead in the second half when in the 64th minute, Mauricio Diaz De Leon found Miguel Aguilar in the middle of the field alone and the junior forward took his defender one-on-one and fired his shot low and past San Diego goalie Michael D'Arrigo.
It is Aguilar's second goal of the season and second in WCC play. It is also the first time the Dons have scored at least two goals since Sept. 8 when they beat San Jose State 2-1.
USF took 12 shots and put seven on goal. Aguilar had a team-high three shots on goal and David Garrett had two.
San Francisco has now won two straight conference matches and will be taking on a hot Loyola Marymount team on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles. The win also snapped a short two-game skid against the Toreros.
Connor Gaal made his second straight start saved three shots in the first half including one in the 30th minute where he had to dive to his right to block a shot from Keegen Smith. Gaal had four saves for the game and recorded his third shutout of the season. The Dons are 4-1-0 when he starts in goal.
San Diego (3-6-3, 0-3-2) took 14 total shots and put up nine in the second half.
This match was the second of a four-game stint away from Negoesco Stadium. The final game of the run will be a nonconference trip to Stanford on Oct. 25.
