Box Score
SANTA CLARA, Calif.—It was a day to forget for the Dons as No. 11 Santa Clara jumped on San Francisco early and carried that momentum to a 9-0 West Coast Conference win on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Dons (5-8-3, 0-4-1 WCC) came in knowing it was going to be a tough task to potentially defeat the Broncos, who came in having won six straight contests and had never lost to USF, but had some confidence considering the last time the two had met, they earned their first ever point against their South Bay rival.
Â
The Dons scored twice in that contest and it seemed they might hang around in this game.
Â
After Santa Clara (11-3-1, 5-0-0) got on the board in the 11th minute when Ellie Rice scored off a pass from Morgan Marlborough, the Dons seemed like they might get back into the game. In the 20th minute,
Tyler Campagna had her shot saved by Andi Tostanoski and the Dons followed it up with two corner kicks but were unable to find a shot on either attempt.
Â
San Francisco had six corner kicks against the Broncos.
Â
Madalyn Schiffel also had her work cut out for her and early on seemed up to the task. She had four first half saves when the Broncos began to break the game open.
Â
In the 38th minute, Marlborough scored one of her own after she took a pass in the box from Sofia Huerta to give Santa Clara a 3-0 lead. The Broncos went into halftime with a 4-0 lead.
Â
Marlborough was not done and scored two more goals within four minutes of each other in the second half to record her second hat trick of the season.
Â
Schiffel faced 14 shots on goal against Santa Clara. It is the second time this season Schiffel has had to handle 10 or more shots in a game (Cal, 11).
Â
It was the Dons' first game in nine days after tying Pacific 1-1 on Oct. 18.
Â
The Dons will return home for its final home contests of the season when they host Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. The Pepperdine game will be broadcast live on TheW.TV and San Francisco soccer broadcaster Charles Wollin will be on the call.
Â
The Waves are currently in fourth place in the WCC. Loyola Marymount entered this weekend at 3-13-0 and is 0-5-0 in WCC play.
