SAN FRANCISCO—After a strong weekend in their final homestand, the Dons look to replicate that success on the road as they wrap up the season with trips to Gonzaga and No. 12 Portland.
Â
San Francisco (6-8-4, 1-4-2 WCC) won its first conference game of the season in a brilliant performance against Pepperdine on Friday night. The team scored twice for the first time since early September and recorded its sixth shutout of the season. They followed it up with a tie against Loyola Marymount after having taken an early 1-0 lead.
Â
A win this weekend would match the Dons' win total from last season when they finished 7-8-4. Two more wins would give San Francisco its first season of finishing .500 or better since 2009 when the squad went 7-7-5.
Â
MACK ON THE ATTACK
Mackenzie Krieser finally broke through this weekend and scored her first goal since the team's opener against Nevada. She also chipped in with an assist on a goal by
Amanda Whittle against LMU. The three points was a team best over the weekend that saw the squad pick up four points.
Â
WHITTLE ACTIVE AGAIN
Amanda Whittle picked up three points over the weekend and is now tied with
Lexie Krueger and Krieser for the team lead in points with six. Her goal against LMU put the Dons up 1-0 and she had a few other near chances to put the team up more. It is the second time this season she has recorded three points in a single weekend.
Â
SHUTTING THEM DOWN
Sophomore
Madalyn Schiffel recorded her sixth shutout of the season with the 2-0 victory over Pepperdine. She has nine for her career and helped the Dons to their second consecutive season with at least six shutouts. The team record for most shutouts is 10, which occurred in 1994 and 1996.
Â
FINAL MATCHES FOR SENIORS
Tyler Campagna,
Kelsey Moe,
Christina Moberg,
Kelly Hoose and
Layla Martin play in their final games for the Dons this weekend. The five have combined to play in 280 games over the last four seasons and have racked up four all-conference and two conference all-academic honors.
Â
ABOUT GONZAGA (6-10-1, 2-5-0)
All-time record vs. Gonzaga: 15-5-0
The Bulldogs have lost four of their last five matches but won the most recent contest at Saint Mary's 2-1. Gonzaga has allowed at least one goal in each of the last eight games and has given up multiple four times in that stretch. Heather Johnson and Karley Baggerly have 10 points each to lead the team.
