SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Despite holding San Diego's Amy Kame to eight points on 4-of-15 shooting, the University of San Francisco fell to the Toreros 62-52 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion Saturday afternoon.

USF was led by senior Mel Khlok's 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Zhane Dikes added 13 points for her 11th consecutive double-digit scoring effort, and Taylor Proctor contributed 11 points and seven rebounds for the Dons.

Heading into the final week of the regular season and still vying for positioning in the West Coast Conference tournament, San Diego moves to 19-8 overall (11-4 WCC), while USF moves to 11-17 (3-11 WCC).

The competitive game started with the Dons building a 9-4 advantage over San Diego after Alicia Scafidi laid it in with 15:52 on the clock. But the Toreros went on an 8-2 run to earn the lead after consecutive layups by USD's Katelyn McDaniel.

The game was knotted at 15 apiece with 8:50 to play in the half, the only tie of the day, when the Toreros scored the next seven points in the contest to gain a seven-point lead. A three-pointer off the hand of Alexa Hardick, her 24th of the season, stopped the run with 4:17 remaining. After scoring five straight, San Diego finished the half with a 9-2 run to grow the advantage to 31-22 by halftime.

USF cut back into the Toreros lead when Khlok picked up a steal and shuttled the outlet pass to Dikes. Her jump-stop layup and converted 3-point play from the line with 14:19 to play put the score at 39-31 in favor of San Diego.

After the Toreros again edged the advantage to double-digits, a triple by Khlok cut the San Diego lead to nine points with 8:34 to play. When Dikes finessed a layup up and in with 2:40 to play, the Dons got the score to 53-45, but USF couldn't pull any closer.

Dons defense held Kame, San Diego's leading scorer, to two points on 1-of-7 shooting in the first half. The junior, who averages a team-high 16.4 points a game, finished with eight points on 4-of-15 shooting.

Instead, the bulk of the San Diego scoring was done by Katelyn McDaniel, who led the game with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Maya Hood added 14 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

San Diego finished the game shooting 42.6 percent from the field, compared to USF's 33.3 percent shooting. The Dons went to the line 19 times, compared to the Toreros' 13, but USF only managed to make 11 of its attempts from the stripe.

The Dons return to the Hilltop for a pair to close out the season, starting the week with a showdown with Pepperdine Thursday at 7 p.m.
