Just the Facts, Ma'am
-
San Francisco (10-17, 3-11 WCC) has the good fortune of closing out the regular season with a pair of games within the friendly confines of War Memorial Gym, starting with the visiting Pepperdine Waves. The Dons sport an overall record of 7-6 on the Hilltop, but have lost its last three home games.
-
Pepperdine (4-21, 1-13 WCC) is in the midst of a 12-game losing streak, picking up its last win against USF on Jan. 10.
-
In the last see-saw battle between the Dons and the Waves, USF held the three-point lead with 8:12 remaining and the score at 54-51. However, three straight long-range shots by the home team stalled any momentum the Dons had built and gave Pepperdine a 6-point lead with 6:22 to play. The Dons got it back to a one-possession game with 3:39 remaining and again with 10 seconds to play, but couldn't get over the hump, falling 71-67.
In it to Win it
-
With USF earning its 10th win of the season at Portland, the Dons will finish the season with a double-digit win tally for the first time since the 2007-08 season when the team was 14-16. This year is the most successful to date for three-year head coach Jennifer Azzi.
Devine's Dimes
-
“Pepperdine head coach Julie Rousseau and I happen to share a birthday—November 26. We're only a couple of years apart in age, but she has aged better than I have! She calls me her 'birthday brother', and we both share Peanuts creator Charles Schultz as our birthday sibling.” — George Devine, USF play-by-play man
Know the Foe
-
The Waves enter with Shay Cooney Williams's 9.4 points and Kelsey Patrick's 5.0 rebounds a game pacing the team. In the first meeting of the season between these two teams, Patrick finished with a game-high 16 points, followed closely behind by William's 15-point effort.
-
Pepperdine, who has struggled to a conference-low 54.1 points per game, is shooting a league-low 33.9 percent from the field on the season. Currently sitting in last in the West Coast Conference standings, the Waves were picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches poll.
USF and Pepperdine—The Series
-
The Waves hold a slight 34-31 advantage in the all-time series over the Dons, and have bested USF in nine of its last 10 head-to-head contests. The series, which began in 1978, was marked by two AIAW regional games to kick off the long-standing matchup.
San Diego Remix
-
The Dons were led by senior Mel Khlok's 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals in the 62-52 loss at San Diego. The senior from Sacramento, picked up her 20th game of the season with 10 or more points.
-
At least three Dons finished with double-digit scoring efforts for the 21st game this season.
-
All eight players for USF contributed at least one rebound in the contest, despite being edged out 40-38 on the boards.
Don't Mess with Texas
-
Alexa Hardick, better known as “Tex”, is USF's sharpshooter from beyond the arc. She stands second in the WCC for 3-point shooting in conference games, slinging 20-of-43 attempts in the Dons' WCC contests. For the season, Hardick is shooting 47.1 percent from long-range. If she met the NCAA minimum of averaging 2.0 3-pointers per game, her percentage would rank fifth in the nation.
