SACRAMENTO, Calif.—The Dons made a furious comeback late in the second half to force overtime and stalemate Sacramento State 1-1 in double overtime on Thursday afternoon.
The Dons (3-1-1) made a late surge and nearly tied the game late in the match. In the 76th minute, Danny Kirkland and Kyle MacLeod both had looks at the net but Sacramento State goalie Cesar Castillo made the critical saves to keep the Hornets on top.
USF picked up its intensity. In the 84th minute, Michael Shaddock and David Garrett had their shots knocked away by Castillo but Garrett cleaned up his rebound and tied the game 1-1.
It is Garrett's second goal of the season. The Dons had four shots on goal in the final 15 minutes of regulation.
Goalkeeper Chase Hauser put the team in position to make the comeback. After Sacramento State's initial goal, Hauser kept the Hornets off the board and picked up seven saves on the afternoon. Sacramento State (1-1-2) had 20 shots on the afternoon and all but two of them came in the first 70 minutes of the match.
The Hornets made it a very physical match and were tagged with 19 fouls and a red card. This comes only days after the Dons played against San Jose State and saw six yellow cards and a red card issued.
USF will take its act to Davis on Sunday where they will take on a UC Davis team that beat West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's 1-0 this afternoon. Their one goal came from Ryan Gross on a penalty kick in the 41st minute.
Hornets forward Isaac Ikyurav went on the early attack had his first shot saved by Hauser in the 21st minute but came right back in the 22nd minute to blow one by the junior goalie to give Sacramento State the 1-0 lead.
He took four shots and put them all on goal against USF.
The Hornets kept the pressure on the defense and Hauser. Early in the second half, Sacramento State held a 13-1 shot advantage, with eight coming from Edwin Luna.
