EUGENE, Ore.—After letting Oregon tie the game late, the Dons defense stepped up and was able to contain the Ducks to force the 1-1 tie on Friday night.
Â
Much like the Dons (5-2-1) had done most of the season, they turned it into a defensive contest and made life difficult for Oregon. The Ducks were held to three shots in the first half but they were able to get two good looks at the net.
Â
In the 24th minute, Bri Pugh raced down the right side past the Dons defenders and took a shot, which was saved on a diving save from
Madalyn Schiffel. The USF goalie finished with four saves on the night.
Â
The Dons, who ranked 36th in the nation in goals allowed average, have allowed only one first half goal this season and have still only allowed more than one goal once this season.
Â
Lexie Krueger made her first career start and she cashed in the opportunity in the second half. The Dons broke the scoreless tie in the 50th minute when Krueger found space and drilled a kick into the back of the net to give USF the 1-0 lead. It was her team-high third goal of the season.
Â
San Francisco continued to play solid defense through the second half and was successful limiting Oregon's opportunities near the goal. But in the 77th minute, the Dons were unable to clear a corner kick and from the top of the box Reilley Moore found an opening in the top right corner to the goal to tie the game 1-1.
Â
The Dons had limited chances themselves. Oregon held San Francisco to 10 shots on the night and only one in the overtime period.
Â
The Dons have played consecutive matches against teams from major conferences (Nebraska, Kansas, Oregon) and have come out of the three-game stretch with a 1-1-1 record heading into its match against Portland State on Sunday.
