San Francisco – The San Francisco women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Portland at The Olympic Club Friday.
The Dons were solid up and down the lineup to improve their overall record to 13-7, and 2-5 in West Coast Conference action heading into the final matches of the regular season. For Portland, the loss drops the Pilots to 5-8 (1-4 WCC) on the year.
USF opened the day by easing to the doubles point after Sofia Holmberg and Thyra Taune recorded the 8-0 shutout over Portland's Maja Mladenovic and Tori Troesch. No. 3 duo of Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and Brooke Irish downed Saroop Dhett and Marina Reimers, 8-3, and the last doubles dual was unfinished after the point was decided.
In singles play, three Dons nabbed straight-set wins over their opponents. Brooke Irish handily dispatched Reimers, 6-1, 6-0, and Marina Nikolic picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dhatt. From the No. 2 position, Thyra Taune won the second-set tiebreak over Sophie Van den Aarssen to score the 6-1, 7-6(3) win.
For the headline matchup of the day, Andrea Ka edged out to the lead after taking the first set from Mladenovic 6-3, but the Pilot raced back in the second to force a third. Ka, a sophomore from Paris, France, notched the 6-2 set win to take the point and 14th victory of the spring.
Holmberg, a sophomore from Stockholm, Sweden, nabbed her second win of the day after downing Jelena Lazarevic, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. The victory was especially sweet for Holmberg, as she turned 21 years old Friday.
Next, USF meets up with Gonzaga Saturday to close out the season's home slate. First serve between the Dons and Bulldogs is slated for 4 p.m.
