SAN FRANCISCO—After struggling to find a rhythm in the first half against Portland State on Friday, the Dons jumped all over the LIU Brooklyn defense and scored three first half goals en route to the 3-0 victory to close out the USF Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
Â
"We wanted to start fast today and they did that," San Francisco head coach Jim Milinder said. "I thought we did a good job of knocking the ball around. We played the ball all over equally and dispersed it.
Â
"I was pleased with the performance today. I thought we came out quick. We didn't come out quick the other night. We talked about that yesterday in training. I think they wanted to make a point today."
Â
San Francisco struck before most of the fans had time to sit down as
Jessica Nakae crossed a pass to
Sydnie Telson at the top of the box in the second minute of play and scored to give the Dons a 1-0 lead.
Â
The early goal gave the Dons some confidence and it showed as they remained on the attack and in the 30th minute the Dons pieced together a string of passes that found
Sonja Giraud near the top of the box and she drilled it passed the diving Jessica Montrose for the second goal of the game.
Â
It was Giraud's first collegiate goal.
Â
"She's going to be a real good player here for the next four years," Millinder said. "She's getting acclimated to playing Friday-Sunday. In Germany, they play one game a weekend."
Â
The good fortune continued for the Dons in the 45th minute when
Charlee Garcia broke away from two LIU Brooklyn defenders and from about 25 yards out booted the ball off the crossbar and off Montrose's back for the goal.
Â
It is the second in the last three matches the Dons have scored three goals in a single game.
Â
Because the Dons broke out to the early lead, it allowed a number of the newcomers to get significant playing time. Carissa Marine,
Camille Wilson and
Maddy Glaser all played heavy minutes in the second half and
Kaile Johnson and
Jan van Hasselt also saw action.
Â
"We've got some brand new players that have come in. Everybody's got to get used to each other. It takes a while.
Â
The Dons will take their act on the road to the New England area to take on Harvard and Boston University, beginning on Friday.
