SAN FRANCISCO—The Dons had an impressive showing over the weekend in Boston and aim to continue the strong string of play as they return to California to take on UC Davis and host San Jose State beginning on Friday.
Â
San Francisco split the tough Boston road trip against two defending conference champions in Harvard and Boston University. The Dons had defeated Harvard last season 1-0 but fell behind early and was unable to get the equalizer, dropping the weekend opener 1-0. They rebounded well against Boston and got ahead early with a ninth minute goal from
Jessica Nakae, which was enough to seal the 1-0 victory.
Â
It was one of the tougher weekends on the Dons' schedule.
Â
This week, they will travel north to take on UC Davis on Friday at 5 p.m. and wrap up the weekend at home against San Jose State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Â
SIGNATURE WIN AT BOSTONThe Dons picked up what might be their most impressive win under
Jim Millinder when they traveled to Massachusetts and beat Boston University 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. After a
Jessica Nakae goal in the ninth minute of action, USF held the Terriers to five total shots with only two being on goal. Boston is the defending Patriot League champion.
Â
THIRD IN REGIONThe latest polls came out on Tuesday and the Dons are waking waves. USF was voted third in the NSCAA West Region poll this week, ahead of conference foe Santa Clara. The Dons have faced two teams receiving votes for the Top 25 thus far and are scheduled to play three more this season.
Â
DOUBLE HEADER SUNDAYThe Dons play the opening match of a double header with the USF men's soccer team on Sunday, which begins at 12 p.m. against San Jose State. The men's soccer match will pit the Dons against Central Arkansas with game time at 3 p.m.
Â
INTERNATIONAL PLAYJunior defender
Leticia Torres left the team following its match at Harvard on Sept. 5 to join the Chilean National Team as they compete in Brazil in the CONMEBOL two-round FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Torres was with the Chilean Team during the spring and helped guide it to an appearance in the South American Cup final. Their first match is on Friday against Argentina.

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED GOALIEMadalyn Schiffel, who was named to the All-WCC honorable mention team last season, participated in the Team USA U-20 camp in April with some of the best college players in the country. She recorded six shutouts last season and had 10 other matches where she only allowed one goal.
Â
RETURNING ALL-LEAGUE PLAYERSThe Dons have five returning players who have earned All-WCC honors and among those are three who earned honors last season.
Madalyn Schiffel and
Halle Bissin earned honorable mention honors and
Jessica Nakae was selected to the All-Freshman Team.
Jaciara Mello (2011 All-Freshman Team) and
Mackenzie Krieser (2012 All-WCC Second Team) also return for the Dons.
Â
ABOUT UC DAVISThe Aggies have had their ups and downs this season and after staring off 3-1, they have dropped their last two matches. UC Davis has not scored more than one goal in any match this season but has been able to keep it close with some strong defensive play. Goalkeeper Taylor Jem has allowed five goals in their first six matches, including three shutouts.
Â
ABOUT SAN JOSE STATEThe Spartans had been hard pressed to find a goal early on but broke out on Sunday when they scored four times at West Coast Conference foe Pacific to take the 4-0 victory. It brought San Jose State's season total to five through five matches but the four goals indicate it could surprise again. San Jose State goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis holds a 0.80 goals against average on the season.
