OREM, Utah –
Taylor Proctor's banner night for the San Francisco women's basketball team was all for naught in a 94-88 overtime loss to Utah Valley at the UCCU Center on Monday night.
The Dons led by 19 points with 14:45 remaining in regulation before the Wolverines (4-1, 0-0 WAC) turned the tables with a furious fourth-quarter surge to force an overtime period. The home team continued its momentum into the bonus minutes, shooting 4-for-5 from the floor and posting an 8-for-11 effort from the line to close out the comeback.
Proctor made an historic rise in the record books, scoring 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the first quarter of the night. On the 17th point off a triple from the junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., she pulled even with Teri Hunt ('84-87) for 10th place in career points. Three minutes later, Proctor earned her spot as an all-time top-10 scorer at USF.
By the end of the evening, her career tally stood at 1277, and Proctor's 39-point effort stands as a new career high. In fact, her tally stands tied for the second-best single-game performance in school history, even with USF Hall of Famer Mary Hile-Nepfels's mark against Pepperdine in 1979, and three points shy of Teri Hunt's 42 points against San Diego on Jan. 31, 1987.
The Wolverines jumped out to the early lead, sinking three 3-pointers in the first 5:20 to hold an 11-7 advantage. Utah Valley enjoyed the 14-9 lead after Rebecca MaWhinney sunk her three attempts from the line with 3:59 on the clock in the first. But a 10-0 run, eight of which came off the hand of Proctor, gave the Dons the 19-14 lead with 52 seconds to play in the first.
The Dons extended the lead in the second, building a 10-point advantage after
Michaela Rakova nabbed the steal and
Rachel Howard connected on her jumper with 6:14 to play in the half. By the break, USF was up 37-21, and the Dons were shooting 51.7 percent from the floor. On the other hand, Utah Valley could only muster a 25.0 percent effort in the first 20 minutes, and the Dons held the 22-2 advantage in the paint.
In the third quarter, USF continued to extend the margin to 19 points. The Dons enjoyed a 49-30 advantage with 4:41 to play in the period after stringing together nine straight points. Utah Valley put together a spurt of their own to close the period, but USF's lead was still 12.
The tide turned midway through the fourth as Utah Valley's Mariah Seals strung together seven consecutive points to cap a 13-3 run as the Wolverines cut the USF lead to four points. USF continued to hold the advantage late in regulation, but a timely three from Seals with 19.7 narrowed the gap, and Karlee Norris' layup with two seconds to go forced the overtime period.
Howard hit a 3-pointer to score the first basket of the bonus period, but back-to-back triples for Rebecca MaWhinney and Seals put the Wolverines ahead.
Zhane Dikes added her own swish from distance to give the Dons' their last tie of the game at 82 apiece. Utah Valley went on to score the final six points of the night from the free throw line to spoil USF's evening.
By the end of the contest, Utah Valley had improved its shooting percentage to 50.9 percent, including a 4-for-5 effort in the overtime period. Seals finished with 33 points, 21 of which came after the halftime break where she went 8-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-6 from 3-point range.
Next on the docket, the Dons return home to War Memorial at the Sobrato Center to meet up with North Dakota. USF and the newly-renamed Fighting Hawks on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., as the front-end of a men's and women's basketball double-dip.
Fans can enjoy the women's contest and stay for the men versus UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m., for one price. As part of USF's efforts to "Engage in the Community," on this Thanksgiving Week, patrons are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or pair of new socks to donate to the local community in exchange for a $5 ticket to the night of hoops on the Hilltop.
