Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Dons Knocked Off by Portland 1-0

PORTLAND, Ore. – The USF women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss on a rainy night at Merlo Field in Portland on Saturday. The loss means the Dons (13-4-3, 7-2-0) finish the regular season in second place behind BYU, and will now wait until Monday to learn their NCAA Tournament fate.

The second-place finish is the best in Dons women's soccer history, surpassing third-place finishes in 1993 and 1997. The Dons were picked to finish sixth in the 2015 WCC Preseason Poll.

In an otherwise uneventful first half, the Dons almost took a lead when Camille Wilson's shot bounced off the left post in the 15th minute.
That would be the best look for either team as USF held a slight 8-7 edge in shots in a very evenly matched first half.
Coming out of halftime, Portland (8-11-0, 4-5-0) pulled ahead 1-0 on Alison Wetherington's goal in the 53rd minute. Parkes Kendrick sent in a low cross nearly from the end line that slipped through a sea of USF defenders right to the feet of Wetherington, who muscled it past Madalyn Schiffel for the score.

Alex Alugas just missed out on the equalizer in the 64th minute when her right-footed rocket from the right wing bounced off the crossbar.

Midway through the second half – as the rain started to pick up – the Dons made a strong offensive push. Tiara Webb took a pass and fired off a firm one-timer right on frame, but the attempt was swatted away by Portland keeper Hanna De Haan in the 70th minute.

That was just one of numerous chances the Dons had but could not convert in the second half.

Altogether, USF enjoyed a sizeable 16-9 advantage in shots on the night, including an 8-2 edge in the second half. Of the Dons' 16 shots, seven of them were on goal, compared with just two of Portland's nine shots.

USF also had one more corner kick opportunity than the Pilots at 4-3.

Amanda Whittle led the Dons with three shots, one of which was on frame.

The loss snapped a program-best seven-match road unbeaten streak for the Dons.

With a No. 62 RPI ranking coming into the weekend, USF will be on the bubble when the 64-team NCAA Tournament field will be announced at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time on Monday.
