San Luis Obispo, Calf. – After clenching the doubles point against the Mustangs, USF men's tennis fell just short in singles play for Cal Poly to take the match, 4-3.
"Credit to the Mustangs for fighting hard today and this match was positive for us to know that we will need to look to be more clutch in the end of our sets next week against two tough programs," said head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida.
In clutch tennis play, the duo Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa won the first match of the day in a quick set, 6-2, against Garrett Auproux and Karl Enrander. In number three doubles Christian Brockstedt and Alex Santiago claimed the doubles point for the Dons 6-1.
The battle began in singles play where Vasco Valverde came off with a win giving USF with a lead of 2-0 against Lucas Lesoeur, 6-2,6-3. Brockstedt and Skajaa lost their matches, but Saraiva won his match against Ben Donovan after coming from a set down, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Thomas Takemoto and Johan Samuelsson both battled and unfortunately couldn't put away their opponents in the end.
The Dons will be headed back in home territory for their next match against UC Davis on February 20.
