Cecilio Goes Seven Shutout in Loss

DALLAS, Tex.—Christian Cecilio went out and had another masterful performance as he went seven shutout innings but was matched on the mound and it remained scoreless into the ninth where No. 15 Dallas Baptist got a walk-off walk to beat the Dons 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

"He gave us every opportunity to win," San Francisco head coach Nino Giarratano said of Cecilio. "He was as sharp as I've seen him this season. Even when he got in trouble, he was able to execute pitches and get out of it."

With the game still scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, Dallas Baptist led off the inning with a double from Tagg Duce. The next batter, Chane Lynch, then hit one high off the wall in left but Duce had to hold to make sure it was not caught and DBU had runners at second and third with no outs.

After a pitching change and an intentional walk to load the bases, Travis Ulvestad went to a full count but could not find the zone and walked in the game-winning run.

The Dons will wrap up the series against Dallas Baptist tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Much like in the Friday matchup, the Dons put together a two-out rally in the first when Brendan Hendriks and Derek Atkinson came through with singles to put runners at first and second but could do no more as Dominic Miroglio struck out to end the inning.

Dallas Baptist had a chance to get on the board in the third when the leadoff man reached base on an error by Hendriks. The runner moved to third on a wild pitch and a tag up with one out and Dons starter Christian Cecilio gritted out the inning by getting a strikeout and a line out to short to get out of the jam.

With two outs in the fifth, the Dons put two runners on with a hit by pitch and a walk but Miroglio grounded one back to the mound to end the inning.

"Yesterday, we had great at bats from [Connor] Hofmann and Nico [Giarratano]. Today he had great at bats from Nico, [Hendriks], and Derek [Atkinson] but it's going to take more than three guys," Giarratano said. "We had our best RBI guy [Miroglio] three times with runners on and we didn't get anything for it.

"What we need tis someone to get that big hit to get us going."

Hendriks and Atkinson combined to go 4-for-7 and reached base five times.

Cecilio continued to roll through the Patriot lineup and retired 10 straight batters between the third and sixth innings. In the sixth, Dallas Baptist looked to have their best chance to get on the board when it got two two-out hits and a walk to load the bases and Cecilio danced out of danger with a line out to short.

The Dons left hander went seven shutout innings and allowed four hits with eight strikeouts. It was the sixth time this season Cecilio has struck out at least eight and the fewest hits allowed this year.

He also eclipsed the 100 inning mark for the first time in his career.

With two down in the seventh, the Dons caught a break when David Martinelli hit a ball into the right centerfield gap and what looked like a sure triple turned into a ground rule double when the ball got stuck under the wall in center.
