SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – All the courts were in action on the campus of UC Santa Barbara last weekend in the compass draw format, as the San Francisco men proved to have a successful weekend at the UCSB Classic.
"Overall, it was very good showing from our squad with the senior and freshman combos in doubles proving to be a good mix," said USF head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "In singles, we were able to win more matches than all other programs who brought four players proving that our guys were competing hard in every match."
Competing in Flight A, freshman Mert Zincirli claimed third place in the brackets, defeating seniors from UC Davis and Oregon en route to the Top 3 finish. In his final match of the weekend, he took down UCSB's Cody Rakela 6-2, 6-1, his second straight-set victory on the weekend.
Senior Christian Brockstedt finished as the Flight C singles runner-up after playing what was described by Pires de Almeida as "some of the best tennis of his career." Brockstedt posted victories over opponents from Pacific, California and UC Davis before falling to Cal Poly's Karl Enander in the finals.
Brockstedt and Zincirli also teamed up in the Flight A doubles bracket, placing third after knocking off Wade and McKelvie from UC Davis, 8-4, in their final match of the weekend.
The other freshman/upperclassman duo for the Dons was Paul Giraud and Woravin Kumthonkittikul. Playing against competition in Flight C, the pair pulled out the hard-fought victory in the consolation finals. Taking on conference foes Brian Lee and Jacob Lagman of Saint Mary's, Giraud and Kumthonkittikul held on to win the consolation bracket, 8-7(7-5).
Individually, Giraud was the consolation runner-up in Flight C, taking down opponents from Oregon and Pacific on the weekend. Slotted in Flight B, Kumthonkittikul earned victories over the flight's Nos. 1 and 2 seeds; Ty Gentry of Oregon and UCSB's Teague Hamilton as he finished as the bracket's sixth-place individual.
Up next for the Dons is a week in Berkeley, at the UTTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Cal. Action begins Wednesday, and runs through Monday, on the courts at the Hellman Tennis Complex, Channing Tennis Courts and Hearst Tennis Courts.
