SAN FRANCISCO- A late double overtime goal by captain Josh Smith sealed the win for the Dons as they defeat conference rival Gonzaga, 2-1 on a soggy Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.
The Dons tied the game with a late 85th minute goal by David Garrett forced the extra time and a game-winning golden goal in the 103rd minute by Smith capped the hard-fought win over the Bulldogs. The win improves the Dons' record to 6-6-0 (2-1-0 WCC) while Gonzaga drops to 7-5-1 (1-2-0 WCC).
The Bulldogs tried to take as much advantage as they could with 17 total shots taken throughout the game, but could only secure one goal by Jalen Crisler in the 76th minute from a pin-point corner kick pass from Jakob Granlund.
USF remained aggressive by tying the game 1-1 as Aaron Lombardi made an illustrious corner kick to Garret, who scored the game-tying goal with a header in the 85th minute of the match. Both the Bulldogs and the Dons missed a few opportunities with missed goals by Bryce Kaminski and Gonzaga's midfielder Conner Ourada to send the game into overtime.
In second overtime, Gonzaga midfielder Christo Michaelson nearly gave the Bulldogs their eigth win of the season with an aggressive move at the goal uncontests on defense, but Michaelson's shot barely grazed the side of the goal post to keep the Dons' chances alive. USF took advantage with a beautiful corner kick from Lombardi to Smith for the game-winning header goal that gave USF their second overtime win of the season.
USF will hit the road to take on St. Mary's next Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Moraga Calif.
