MALIBU, Calif. -- USF frustrated 19th-ranked Pepperdine for much of the match on Sunday until Taylor Alvardo found the back of the net in the 79th minute to lift the Waves to a 1-0 victory over the Dons.
The win improves Pepperdine's record to 11-3-3 overall and 6-0-1 in the WCC and is the Waves sixth consecutive victory since they played Portland to a scoreless draw in the season opener. USF falls to 6-10-0 and 2-4-0 in the WCC.
Alvarado's game-winner came with less than 15 minutes in the match after teammate Rylee Baisden had a shot turned back from USF keeper
Makayla Presgrave. Alvarado gathered the deflection and converted the rebound for her second goal of the season.
The Waves had a goal called back minutes before Alvarado's game-winner when Baisden was called off side after heading a cross past Presgrave.
Pepperdine outshot USF, 25-8 while Presgrave was credited with eight saves. Wave keeper Hannah Seabert had three saves on the day.
USF will return to action on Friday when the Dons play host to the Portland Pilots at 7:00 p.m. The Dons will close out the weekend with a home match against Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m.
