RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- USF earned the distinction of being the best of the rest at The Farms Collegiate Invitational, where the Dons finished a distant second to SMU in the nine-team event held in Rancho Santa Fe.
After carding a final round 298 on Tuesday, the Dons finished with a 54-hole team score of 885 (+21), which left USF 29 strokes behind the Mustangs, who ran away with the team title with a winning score of 856 (-8). USF finished nine strokes ahead of third place UC Irvine and UC Riverside and were well clear of WCC foes San Diego (901) and Loyola Marymount (916).
Ryan Burgess of SMU claimed medalist honors with a 7-under score of 209, earning a two-stroke victory over teammate Austin Smothererman.
Henry Chung, playing as an individual, was USF's top finisher. The sophomore used a final round 69 to jump into fourth place with a 4-under score of 212. Chung played his last five holes at 5-under par, making an eagle on the par-5 12th followed by birdies on 13 and 14.
Max Alcorn, who had a share of the lead when play was suspended yesterday, finished tied for sixth at even par 216 following a final round 76. Alcorn was 1-under on his round after 11 holes but played his final eight holes 5-over par for a final round 76.
Kraig McLeod turned in his second consecutive even par round of 72 and jumped five spots up the leader board into a tie for 12th place at 221 (+5).
Sebastian Crookall-Nixon closed with a 74 and tied for 15th place at 223. The senior got off to a rough start and was 3-over after four holes before picking up birdies on holes 7, 8 and 18.
Raymart Tolentino tied for 25th at 227 (+11) after carding a final round 77 while Mathias Wentjarvi tied for 40th at 231 (+15) on rounds of 76, 79 and 76.
USF will return to action on March 5 when it joins the field at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale.
