Dons Pick Up Win at Home

SAN FRANCISCO –– The USF women's tennis team earned its first win of 2016, beating George Washington 5-2 on Wednesday at the Olympic Club.
The Dons No. 1 pair of Andrea Ka and Thyra Taune started off the day with a dominating 6-0 win over Taylor Nederlander and Allison Hansen. With a chance to pick up the doubles point, Hanna Börjeson and Genevieve McCloskey took down Sara Grubac and Victoria Kogan, 6-2. With the win, the Dons clinched doubles play and moved ahead 1-0 in the match.
Ka continued her great day on the court with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Teodora Radosavljevic at No. 1 singles. George Washington was able to pull the match within a point at No. 2 singles, with Grubac beating Taune 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. However, the Dons came right back at No. 3 singles to move ahead 3-1. McCloskey went ahead 6-3, but Nederlander evened the match with a 6-4 win. In the final set, McCloskey was able to take the point with a 7-6(4) win in the tiebreaker.
With a chance to clinch the match, freshman Shanna Dos Santos earned a straight set, 6-4, 6-2 win over Kogan at No. 4. In the final two matches, senior Sofia Holmberg fell to Hansen 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5, before Börjeson beat Egle Jakuciunaite 7-6(6), 6-2 at No. 6.
USF will remain at home to face Eastern Washington on March 23 at the Olympic Club at 12 p.m.
