SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara struck in the 12
th minute and never looked back as the USF women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 shutout loss on Sunday afternoon.
The Gauchos (3-0) went ahead on Hannah Dearborn's goal coming off a corner kick where Dearborn took a chip shot pass from Sydney Magnin and headed it in for the eventual game winner.
USF (2-2) tried to mount some offensive momentum shortly thereafter as
Sonja Giraud and
Amanda Whittle had shots thwarted by UCSB keeper Brittney Rogers.
In the 30
th minute,
Desiree Major just missed out on an equalizer when her header in the box was batted away by Rogers.
USF keeper
Makayla Presgrave helped keep the lead at 1-0 through the rest of the first half by making all three of her saves in the game during the first frame.
However, coming out in the second half, UCSB took advantage of a USF foul in the box during a corner kick that gave Mallory Hromatko an opportunity for the penalty kick, which she converted in the 52
nd minute to put the Gauchos up 2-0.
The Dons rallied offensively as they tried to make their final push during the second half, outshooting UCSB 6-2 in the second frame and 10-8 overall.
In the 69
th minute, Giraud was again kept out of the net, this time when her shot deflected off the post.
Rogers then knocked away Whittle's attempt in the 77
th minute to help preserve the shutout for UCSB.
